Setting

Zoey 101 is set in the fictional boarding school known as Pacific Coast Academy, or often abbreviated as PCA. The campus of PCA overlooks the Pacific ocean. Formerly an all-boys school, season 1 opens with with the start of the first semester that girls are admitted to the school. The school is a high school and a "lower school." It is not revealed what grade the school begins at. In the first season, the character Dustin Brooks is in 4th grade and has already been attending PCA for at least a few years. No characters of young elementary school age appear in the show. The campus has many features similar to a college campus and the students tend to have much more freedom than students at a typical high school. The students have their own laptops and cellular phones. The campus features a privately owned sushi bar called Sushi Rox, which is frequently patronized by the students, some of whom work there. The campus also has student lounges for both girls and boys.

Synopsis

Season 1

In the pilot episode, we meet the main characters of the show. The episode opens with Zoey (Jamie Lynn Spears), her brother Dustin Brooks (Paul Butcher) and their father driving them to boarding school. When Zoey arrives at PCA, she meets Chase (Sean Flynn). Chase develops a crush on Zoey when he first sees her, causing him to crash his bike into a pole. He offers to show her to her dormitory room, #101 (hence the show title, Zoey 101). Soon after she arrives at her dorm she meets her new roommate and soon to be best friend Nicole Bristow (Alexa Nikolas). When they walk back to their room they meet their other roommate Dana Cruz (Kristin Herrera). Dana and Nicole fight constantly. Quinn Pensky (Erin Sanders), another character on the show, is a weird but an extremely intelligent girl.

Soon afterward Zoey comes across the boys basketball team and when she hears the coach talking about tryouts later that week, she goes and tells him she is going to try out. After that she says to the boys that she wants to try out. Then a boy named Logan Reese (Matthew Underwood) claims that girls can not play basketball as well as boys. Angered, Zoey challenges them to a boys vs. girls game. In addition, Chase's best friend, Michael Barret (Christopher Massey), is introduced.

Season 2

It is a new year at PCA and Dana has left for the European Exchange Program, so Zoey and Nicole need a new roommate, Lola Martinez (Victoria Justice). At the beginning of the season, both Zoey and Chase run for Class President (against their will). Jennette McCurdy makes a special appearance as Dustin's girlfriend. Chase and Michael get their own online show. The sushi restaurant burns down after an accident. This is the season in which the first ever Zoey 101 movie takes place, Zoey 101: Spring Break-Up and the only movie that Nicole appears in.

Season 3

Zoey, Chase, Lola, Michael, Quinn, Logan, and Dustin return to PCA. Zoey and her friends are fifteen, and Dustin is 11-12. Nicole was sent to an all girls school after being diagnosed with Obsessive Male Gender Disorder (OMGD). This causes Quinn to become roommates with Zoey and Lola after she was accidentally assigned to a room that did not exist on PCA campus by the girl's dorm advisor "CoCo. Everyone "grows up" in this and the next season, looking older and having mature personalities. At the end of this season in the "Goodbye Zoey" TV movie, Zoey moves to a boarding school in England. Due to a webcam malfunction, she finds out that Chase loves her, and that Zoey loves him too. This season also features a new main cast.

Originally, "Goodbye Zoey?" could have been the series finale, as the series had not yet been renewed for a fourth season, and thus an alternate ending that wrapped all storylines up was filmed. But it was renewed, and the open-ending was the one used.citation needed

Season 4

Zoey, hearing how Chase feels about her, returns to PCA, but Chase, knowing he loves Zoey, convinces his parents to transfer him to the London boarding school Zoey goes to, only to find out that she has transferred back to PCA to be with him. Chase must remain in England for one semester before returning to PCA as part of the agreement he made with his parents to allow him to transfer. Chase and Zoey finally admit their love for each other. However, they decide to put their relationship on hold until Chase comes back due to the logistical difficulties of a long distance relationship.

Logan and Michael get a new roommate, James Garrett (Austin Butler). James and Zoey become a couple, which lasts almost completely through the season. Lola and Vince Blake, who returns to PCA as better person, become a couple. Logan and Quinn also become a couple, after she and Mark Del Figgalo break up, but at first they keep it a secret not being able to handle the teasing if anyone found out. They secretly date until the hour-long series finale, "Chasing Zoey", in which they admit their love for each other at the PCA Prom. Stacey (Logan's date as selected by Quinn to keep their relationship a secret) gets hit by the car that Mark and Michael were in, and loses her lisp as a result. Also in this episode, Zoey breaks up with James, and Chase returns to PCA, where Zoey kisses him passionately and they finally become a couple.

References to Other Nickelodeon Shows

  • iCarly.com is seen on the computer screens of characters many times in later episodes.
  • In "Son of a Dean", while Quinn is hula-hooping, Lola lies in her bed listening to ringtones, and she picks the iCarly theme song. In the episode "Rollercoaster" when Firewire calls Zoey, Zoey's cellphone's ringtone is the iCarly theme song.
  • When Michael overcomes his fear of rollercoasters, he visits Mystic Mountain. This is a reference to Drake & Josh when they leave their great grandfather with Craig and Eric to go to Mystic Mountain.
  • In the TV movie, "Chasing Zoey", the band, "Backflesh" from iCarly is seen playing at the prom. Brandi Glenn Cyrus, sister of Miley Cyrus, can be seen playing with "Backflesh".citation needed
  • In the episode where Logan and Quinn are dancing in a janitor’s closet, Logan leaves his G.O. in the closet when they leave. The G.O.'s were seen on Drake and Josh, in episodes such as Drake and Josh Go Hollywood. G.O.'s are a parody of the iPod.
  • During the induction at the Silver Hammer Society, the name “Joe Catania” is said. He is the co-producer for Drake and Josh.
  • In "Chasing Zoey", Zoey says that she is going to be working at the Chambrulay Hotel in Maui, Hawaii for the summer. The Chambrulay was used in Drake and Josh. But in Drake and Josh, The Chambrulay is in L.A. County, near Hollywood.
  • In "Chasing Zoey", the song that is playing at the very end of the show is "Take me Back" which was also featured in an episode of iCarly (the song is available on the fan pack edition of the soundtrack).
  • Both Jennette McCurdy and Miranda Cosgrove from iCarly guest star at one time or another.
  • In "Logan Gets Cut Off," the magician who can free himself from any knot appears in Drake and Josh's episode "The Great Doheny."
  • In many episodes there are Blix machines in the dorms. In the iCarly episode, "iStakeout", a Blix machine is seen in the convience store.

Parodies of Popular Culture

  • In "Little Beach Party", Logan says he doogled the location of the beach. Doogle is a parody of Google. In later episodes, Zaplook is a parody of Google.
  • In "Rumor of Love", Michael and Logan are looking up their new roommate and they are on Zaplook.com, which is a mix between Anywho.com and Google.com. If went to on a regular browser, it redirects to iCarly.com. In the TV movie "Chasing Zoey" Quinn and Lola go to the webpage highschoolcrazy.com. If you try to go to that site, it redirects to iCarly.com. In the TV movie "Goodbye Zoey?" Stacey said she bought some cotton swabs from specialyswabs.com in the second half of the show. If you try to go to that site, it redirects to iCarly.com.
  • When Zoey and other characters are using a laptop, it has a pear on it (emulating the Apple apple logo). If you look at the screen, however, it appears that it is a Windows XP machine, based on the Luna theme. Also, in the episode "Time Capsule", Chase's laptop (on which he views the beginning of Zoey's Time Capsule video) has the Energy Blue theme. Having to do with the Apple parodies, in "Chasing Zoey", Zoey had a pear phone, a parody of the iPhone.
  • In the episode "School Dance", when Chase looks at the list, to see who he was paired up with, you can see the name "Marge Dimpson", a parody of The Simpsons.
  • In the movie, "Spring Break-Up," Zoey, Chase, Lola, Michael, Quinn, Logan, & Dustin have Tekmates which are puns on T-Mobile Sidekicks.
  • In the episode "Vince is Back" three of the code names are The Eggman, The Walrus, and Cornflake, which are all lyrics from the Beatles song "I Am The Walrus".
  • The Silver Hammer Society in the episode of the same name may be a reference to Maxwell's Silver Hammer, by the Beatles.
  • In "Webcam" Nicole wears Hello Bunny underwear, which is a pun on Hello Kitty.
  • In "Zoey's Balloon" the sunscreen Golden Tone is a parody of Coppertone.

Trivia

  • In the TV Show, Robbie S! it is parodied by Robert saying to a fellow character: "Hey! I was watching Joey 202!"
  • In Spring Fling, Zoey was wearing the same top as Geena did in Unfabulous.
  • In the first episode of Zoey 101, Zoey is seen wearing a shirt that says Covington. Covington is the name of the boarding school Zoey attends during the third season in the hour long episode, "Goodbye, Zoey". Also, Covington is the name of Jamie Lynn Spears's aunt Sandra Bridge Covington who died on January 21, 2007.
  • Many bands are featured on posters in Zoey's and Chase's dorm rooms: Corinne Bailey Rae, Bad Religion, OK Go, Matchbook Romance, Death Cab for Cutie, Gorillaz, P.O.D., Placebo, Family Force 5, Vanna, Simple Plan, Anberlin, Taproot, Chris Brown, Escape the Fate, KT Tunstall, and DangerDoom
  • On various episodes you can see a tiny poster for Corinne Bailey Rae near the TV in Zoey's room.
  • In the episode "PCA Confidential," Nicole and Dana can be seen in a few flashbacks.
  • In the episode "Rollercoaster" in some scenes where Michael is riding the rollercoaster you can see the name Goliath on the front car which means the scene was taped at Six Flags Magic Mountain. You can also see Colossus and Scream! in the background.
  • When observed closely, the bottles of Blix are actually bottles of FIJI Water with different colored fluids inside.
  • The episode titled "PCA Confidential" was not of standard format (there was no theme song or character introductions).
  • In "Chasing Zoey", the loudspeaker announces that students should sign in with Mr. Bender. Mr. Bender was a teacher seen in seasons 1 and 2.
  • In "Chasing Zoey", Dan Schneider (who is the producer of the show) played the crazy cab driver.
  • In “PCA Confidential,” Stacey still has a lisp but in Chasing Zoey her lisp gets fixed when hit by Michael Barret's car, and it has flashbacks to Chasing Zoey.
  • In "dance contest" when Michael is listening to his headphones he is singing the theme to Zoey 101
  • In many episodes Lola and Zoey laptops show they are on icarly.com
