This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

Standard procedures
If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is Wikipedia:Translation. As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing users talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.
Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.
If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.
When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as xrce, or languid.cantbedone.org to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.
Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.
When pages listed here have been translated, their entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).
Boilerplate text
For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):
- 1. Use the notice {{Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{Notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
|
|
This article needs translation into English.
This article is written in a language other than English. If it is intended for readers from the community of that language, it should be contributed to the Wikipedia in that language. See list of Wikipedias.
Please see this article's entry on Pages needing translation into English for discussion. If the article is not rewritten in English within the next two weeks it will be listed for deletion and/or moved to the Wikipedia in its current language.
If you have just labeled this page as needing translation, please add
{{subst:Needtrans | pg = Pages needing translation into English | Language = unknown | Comments = }} ~~~~
to the bottom of this section of Pages needing translation into English. |
- 2. Add a mention on this page, using:
- {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~ replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~ if you cannot identify the language used
- 3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{Uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is {{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~.
If there is just a section that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:
- 1. Use [[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]].
- 2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
- ''Section [[#name-of-section|name-of-section]] contains text that needs translation into English.''.
- 3. Add a mention on this page.
If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:
- 1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
- 2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section on this page.

It's back again. This time, it needs serious help after a machine translation from Arabic. Cbdorsett (talk) 09:14, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
This apparently started out as a machine translation of it:Meganoidi and could use some heavy cleanup work. I'm quite familiar with Italian and think I could do a translation into something more closely resembling English, but help would be appreciated -- Ferkelparade π 23:11, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
- Notability could be an issue. There are strict rules for music groups. Itsmejudith (talk) 20:01, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
This seems to be a translation of the Turkish version. Needs some tidying up. Akerbeltz (talk) 15:16, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
The language of this article is Spanish. nneonneo talk 17:16, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- I roughly translated the article. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 21:38, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- Does anyone know the Wikipedia policy on genealogy pages? This article is about three generations of the Arcaya family, and it contains little other than lists of children and short descriptions of the various families. Maybe some of the individual members of this family might qualify as notable, such as Álvaro Enrique Arzú Irigoyen who was president of Guatemala from 1996 to 2000. My personal opinion is that pages of this sort are not encyclopedic and should be excluded. Cbdorsett (talk) 05:02, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- In short: Names and Genealogy are not suitable for articles. Surnames maybe. See:Wikipedia:Deletion policy/names and surnames. So I'd say that the first (3?) paragraphs, a ver few others further down (heraldry, general references to world dispersion), and maybe a 'see also' in disambig style, may be worthy. - Nabla (talk) 19:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
- This may be (at least in part) about a Basque medieval "clan", I need to check that because in that case I think it might be notable. Either way, we can keep the page because there's a town by that name (Arcaya/Arkaia) which has no page yet. It might make more sense to turn it into a geo stub and keep some of the genealogoy stuff under a section of "historic families" or "famous ppl from..." or something like that. Akerbeltz (talk) 15:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
June 2008
This article contains untranslated titles of books - maybe Sanskrit, maybe Malayalam. Cbdorsett (talk) 12:19, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
The language of this article is Japanese. Moved back up here because it's mostly untranslated (discussion from before is below). nneonneo talk 21:52, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Old discussion on this article
The language of this article is Japanese. 40% of the article is in English. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 13:02, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
It appears that substantially more than 40% is now in English. Saseigel (talk) 18:39, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- 95% done now. Only two lines remain to be translated, and oddly not consecutive ones. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 01:42, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
-
- Actually it's still around 40% done, the rest has just been commented out. -Yupik (talk) 19:49, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, not even close to being done, but still a valid article in its current state. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 01:56, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Why has it been moved to proofreading since those two sentences are still untranslated? -Yupik (talk) 12:00, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Because the two weeks are up, and we have a valid article even if we delete the untranslated part. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 20:42, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've tried commenting out untranslated parts of timelines before in these Japanese articles and was told specifically not to do it. I'd be fine though with those parts being commented out as this is the English wiki and the people putting these ex-district articles on here have put a lot of them up without ever translating them. -Yupik (talk) 21:23, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- You were told not to do it? By whom? --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 21:38, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'll have to go through my edit list to figure out which one it was. I'll get back to you on it. -Yupik (talk) 19:09, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Untranslated part commented out. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 12:44, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

- This article is being worked on sloooooooooooowly. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 11:56, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
- Time's up. But we still have a valid stub, so I commented out the untranslated section. Still, the stub we have looks like a machine translation. --Blanchardb-Me•MyEars•MyMouth-timed 14:18, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
The language of this article is Chinese. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 10:37, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- I translated the first bit. it's about a surgeon and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Other pages link to him so probably notable (eg Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji University). Akerbeltz (talk) 16:59, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- There is also zh:裘法祖, the translation should preferably be from there. Andreas (T) 02:23, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- I placed the machine translation on talk page. We need to fix the grammar, and then place it in the mainspace. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 18:32, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
July 2008
The initial language of this article was Vietnamese. Parts of this article are okay, but one paragraph appears to include Vietnamese names translated syllable by syllable into English, which doesn't look proper. The last paragraph is entirely in Vietnamese. Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:08, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- I left a note at the Vietnam wikiproject. Some of it seems to be machine translated. Itsmejudith (talk) 21:31, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
The initial language of this article was Chinese. I suspect this is a machine translation of the corresponding article on the Chinese Wikipedia. I'm requesting a translation since my Chinese isn't good enough to do the translation... -Samuel Tan 09:30, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's not a machine translation of zh:福康安. I'm not even completely convinced it's a machine translation, judging from the author's userpage which is written in a similar style to the first revision. I've asked the author for the original material under the assumption that it was translated. I would think, though, that a proper translation from zhwiki would be more appropriate, since the text, as it currently stands, is quite broken.
- As a note: the author's other contributions may also require cleanup. nneonneo talk 15:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
