Renames are a procedure that we only perform if necessary. Preferences are a much easier way to change the "appearance" of your username on Wikipedia. At the top of the page, where there are those links to your watchlist and your contributions, you will see one that reads "my preferences". When you click there, you will be taken to a page with several tabs. You don't even need to change tabs to do this. The tab you will be on will be "User Profile" tab. In it, you will see a field marked "signature". Yours should be empty. In it, you just type the appearance you want your username to have whenever you sign a comment — incidentally, I removed the boldface from your comment above, since it was unnecessary for this —. Then you save the change by clicking on the button marked "Save" at the bottom of the page. That's it. And this has the advantage that, should you change your mind about this in the future, you can make whatever changes to it that you want, whenever you want (but please do observe the limitations: they are in bold right underneath the signature field on the preferences page). It's not the same. When you alter your preferences, your username stays the same (logs and any other system-generated identification of your account will still show your original username). When you set the preferences, you make it so that whenever you sign a comment using tildes, the automatic substitution replaces the tildes with whatever it was that you typed on the "signature" field on the Preferences page — many use this to provide customized links to their talk pages and even their contribution list whenever they sign a comment. When you see signatures that use different colors and provide several links, that's done in the Preferences page, since it would be too much work to link to all those things manually whenever signing a comment. It's been carried out, so that is it. But you should note that it is our job to point out that a username change should be used only for relevant reasons. We do grant requests that are really simple adjustments in the username, but those usually involve more substantive changes, such as fixing typos during the account creation or removing and/or changing parts of the username. When people request, as you have done, a simple change of capitalization in a few letters, it is my job to point out that a satisfactry result can be achieved by setting the Preferences — it is also in the instructions above. That is not to say that we won't grant requests like yours, we do, and we have. But we need a good-enough reason, and you wrote that it just "looks better". Reasons why we set limits to this is that we need people to ask for a rename only if there is an appreciable need for it, and that is because renames add to the workload of both Clerks and Bureaucrats and they can, depending on the case, put a certain strain on our servers.
