WPWX-FM/Power 92 is a mainstream urban radio station that serves the Chicago area. WPWX is owned by Crawford Broadcasting, and broadcasts at 92.3 megahertz. WPWX's urban format debuted in the spring of 2001 in an attempt to go head to head with the longtime urban radio leader in Chicago, WGCI (Crawford Broadcasting previously had a Christian talk format on the 92.3 frequency for over 40 years under the call letters WYCA). At one time WPWX carried the Doug Banks Morning Show (of whom worked at WGCI in the mid-90's) until it was dropped in 2004. WPWX radio personalities include Trey the Choklit Jock, Nikki, Donnie Devoe, The Hot Boyz, DJ Pharris, Ozman, Esko, Keno, and Teefa. The station also features disc jockeys Kid Scratch and BooluMaster.[1] WPWX features Chicago's only mainstream reggae show, Reggae Link Radio Sunday from 9PM - 12AM with the Ladies of Reggae (Petina and DJ Silky) and DJ Lenky.[2]
WPWX is not to be confused with WPWR-TV, the local MyNetworkTV affiliate that was known as "Power 50" for a few months in 2006.
All Crawford Broadcasting Co. radio stations broadcast in High Definition digital (HD) radio, and all Crawford FM's also broadcast in HD-2 (second digital channel) audio.
WPWX broadcasts from a tower near Wolf Lake on the Illinois/Indiana state line, about 20 miles southeast of downtown Chicago.
