Hayek's Brother: Reversion

Please drop a note on my ip's talk page to explain the reversion - thanks! 66.108.211.145 (talk) 04:13, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I reverted the edit because it added challengable information that was not cited to a reliable source and was also probably not relevant to the subject of the article. Cheers. Thingg 12:15, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually I added it because i expected to find it on her page (someone was asking me about this person called Sami Hayek and whether they were related), anyway i checked Wiki and it was missing - i checked other celebs and their pages mention their siblings, even if it's just a one liner or so. You are right i forgot to add citation, I can site plenty of reliable (non blog) references - what do you think? 66.108.211.145 (talk) 02:04, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
If you can provide a reference, I say go for it. Thingg 02:16, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your feedback. Looks like Hondo77 beat me too it (and did a better job). Anyway it's great to deal with reasonable people like you, sometimes it can get so dispiriting trying to enter stuff on Wiki :( - cheers!. 66.108.211.145 (talk) 18:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with the Jablonski vandal earlier today. I think he's starting to get bored. Steve CarlsonTalk 07:53, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you x 2

Thanks for reverting vandalism on my talk page, twice. ... discospinster talk 03:32, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

hey no problem. Since you've been beating me all night, I suppose it's only fair... >:-] Happy editing! Thingg 03:34, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Edits

There is a naming convention for Hungarian and Slovak names after a long discussion. See it at WP:HU-SK. Would you please revert your own edit? Squash Racket (talk) 03:39, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

I was only talking about the article Thurzo. I see that your edits are made in good faith. Squash Racket (talk) 03:42, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Y Done I removed all the ones I could find. (I'm using Huggle so I may have missed a few) My apologies as I was unaware of that discussion. Regards. Thingg 03:43, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

If you want to express your concerns, please do so here. I do so because I googled it a few times and nothing shows up. Thanks, HeLLboy2HeLL (talk) 04:12, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

For some reason I thought radio stations were inherently notable. :/ Thingg 04:18, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't know but Search Engines work right? HeLLboy2HeLL (talk) 04:20, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
heh no, I meant inherently notable in the way cities and towns are. apparently they aren't. Thingg 04:22, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Can you give me a policy that confirms your "Inherently notable"? HeLLboy2HeLL (talk) 04:26, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm not saying that radio stations are inherently notable. I'm saying I thought they were, but apparently, based on the Wikiproject page, they aren't. (as far as I know, there's no official policy on the notability of radio stations) So basically, your prod was correct and I was incorrect in removing it. If you want to replace it, go right ahead. My apologies for the trouble. Thingg 04:31, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry too. Listen, I'm currently on Editor Review. Could you posiibly review me? The link is at my userpage. Thanks in advance! HeLLboy2HeLL (talk) 04:35, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Y Done you have been reviewed. (evil laughter) heh. Sorry it took so long, my internet's been acting up... Cheers and good night. (well, at least I'm going to bed. It's 1:40 AM where I live :O ) Regards. Thingg 05:41, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

A bit unwelcoming

Howdy,

Truly puzzled by what would be your rational for these recent reverts.

bypass disambiguation page to actual related article
used to redirect to the correct person
of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha is her proper title; shorten up the needless trivia on her relations
add wikilink to the subject described
add wikilink to the subject described

While edits without summaries and from IP addresses aren't that well-loved here and considered against proper etiquette, etiquette alone isn't grounds for reverts that are in good faith. Also in violation of the general guideline of friendliness to new editors. Truly hope that you'll take the few seconds it takes to check up on the edits you're reverting from now on. Hope it sincerely sinks in that isn't being helpful to the content nor the new contributors of English Wikipedia. Newby88 (talk) 18:44, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Yeah. ummm.... I didn't realize what that guy was doing at first (I thought he was just randomly messing up pages) and when I did, I went back and removed the damage I could find. Apparently, I missed some. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll go back and look some more... Thingg 01:30, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Don't know if you got that I was the same person that did the intial edits before creating this User account today. Guess she should have been clearer. Guess that what one has still check edits even when doing so many edits. Probably the reason why I'll never be a true Wikipedian and stay casual. Appreciate it and guess over dealing with all the vandalism and junk going on this site, just need those reminders to oneself that newbies are not all bad. Just re-read my 1st and reads so awfully formal or what? Like this is the IRS or something horrible like that. Well, stay loose. Newby88 (talk) 02:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
heh, I thought you were the same person, but since I wasn't sure, I decided not to risk embarrassing myself any more than I already have with my bone-headed reverting.... ;) My apologies for the trouble and thanks for the work you did. Thingg 02:29, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Huggle bug

Hey there thingg :) Long time no speak. Anyway this is regarding the section you created on the huggle feedback page which can now bee seen here I was just wondering if this is still a problem in the most recent version? 0.7.12. If you could reply on my talk page that would be a great help. Thanks in advance. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 09:32, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

No, it's not. Actually, I think I just wasn't giving it enough time to do it's thing, but I'm not sure. In any case, it's not a problem now. :) Thanks for asking though. Regards. Thingg 22:59, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

http://www.last.fm/music/Hayley+Williams/+wiki lists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayley_Williams as a source, so it's not a copyvio. It's a useless circular recycling of text, but it's not a copyvio. :) --Geniac (talk) 13:31, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey thanks for the heads-up. I'll try to pay attention better in the future. Was this related to a CSD tagging? or did I just remove some content? (I can't seem to find the edit you are referring to) I'd just like to know so I won't do it again. Thanks. Thingg 16:35, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK review

Hey there Thingg. Could you review Randy Ruiz at the bottom of the August 1st section at T:TDYK? Thanks! Please reply here, rather than on my talk page. -- RyRy Public (talk) 00:07, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Y Done heh. At first I thought it said "got hit" (as in *pow*, take your base variety) in 24 consecutive games. Now that would have been an accomplishment, especially if he kept playing after about the 14th game.... Thingg 00:14, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Heh, heh. :P That would have been a great hook! Oh well. Thanks Thingg, and keep up the good work. Oh, by the way, if you ever do run for adminship, I'll be very happy to nominate you. I'll make sure my nomination makes others know you'll be a fine administrator. :-) Do you have any plans for that anytime soon? -- RyRy Public (talk) 00:21, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
ummmm.... well. I've thought about it some (it's been over three months since my first one), but I don't know if I really want to go through it again. I still make some bad reverts and CSD tagging and other than vandal fighting/NP patrol and I don't do pretty much anything else other than DYK reviews and patrolling a few pages in my watchlist. Do you think I could pass one? Thingg 00:40, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, I can't tell you right away, i would have to look at your contributions, acrhives, ect., just to really look at you. But bad reverts and inaccurate CSD tags is a problem. Participating at WP:DYK will show you can update DYK since you'll have access to T:DYK. IMO, you won't pass now, but I'm sure you'll do good in the future. Just continue what your doing, and add more article writing in your contributions, and when I think your ready, I'll be sure to let you know in the future. -- RyRy Public (talk) 00:58, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. I'd have to agree with that. Well, thanks for the offer. Thingg 01:03, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Heights of Buildings Act of 1910 DYK

That absolutely works! Thanks, great suggestion. You may fix it. ;) Is it ready for DYK?--SRX 00:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm sure it will be ok as it satisfies all the criteria, but I don't think it would be a good idea for me to verify my own hook. ;) We can probably just leave it until "August 5" gets down to the bottom and if anyone raises some objections, we can deal with himfix them then. Thingg 01:14, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh okay, thank you very much, I'm hoping for the best.--SRX 01:32, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

The Rose Rent DYK

No problem. Thanks for replying and verifying so fast. Thanks. --Captain-tucker (talk) 01:51, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church

Yeah, I was thinking that too when I uploaded it. I took the picture, and I was impressed with the detail and color. I do have the original (as well as two others with slightly different composition) from my camera saved, unedited, if you want me to email it to you for work on it (I suppose you'd have to replicate my discreet cropping, but that shouldn't be hard). Noise is often the biggest problem I face, the reason I've never dared nominate any of my own work ... I suppose I could fix it by layering the sky out and editing it separately (or just using the overlay blend mode, but that always takes more time. I did that here, though, and I'm rather pleased with how that turned out)

Let me know if you want the original (and let me know how you got rid of the artifacting ... I've never found a method that works but then again I haven't tried too hard, I think). Daniel Case (talk) 02:12, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

What I meant when I asked that is do you have a form of this picture that isn't in the jpg format or a way to get one? I think the compression may be what's causing the articfacting but I'm not sure. I'm not too incredibly familiar with the FPC process, so I'm not sure what would have to be done (if anything) to improve the pic. If it's not too much trouble, I'd would like to have the original pic so I can take a shot at removing the artifacting. Thanks. Thingg 02:21, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
My camera's output format is .jpg, actually. Still, I will send you an email so you can email me your address back, right after I finish this post.
I am quite familiar with FPC ... believe me, those people are a tough crowd to please, tougher than the Commons FPC editors are. But they can do a lot to fix an image up if they like it. If you're behind it, and willing to make the nomination on a fixed-up version, let's do it. Daniel Case (talk) 02:27, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
emailed. Thingg 02:30, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
There was a fourth original. Five megs coming your way. Daniel Case (talk) 02:38, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually, just checked my "recent files" list in Photoshop. 101_1529.JPG was the one I worked on. Let me know how it goes. Daniel Case (talk) 02:41, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll see what I can do... Thingg 02:42, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I was able to improve it quite a bit, but I'm not sure if it's good enough. I uploaded it to Image:Image-St Andrew's Episcopal Church, Brewster, NY test.png. (yeah I know, laugh at me for the extra "image"....) Wat do you think? Thingg 16:02, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
That one got rid of the artifacts and the noise, but needs to be brightened up a bit (as opposed to mine, the trees are too dark. I might download it and see what I can do. Daniel Case (talk) 17:46, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

List of PlayStation 3 games

Hi, I just thought I'd let you know that there is a discussion going on on Talk:List of PlayStation 3 games about how to show trophies for unreleased games. As you've made a lot of contributions to the article (including our combined efforts to tidy up the "List of..." articles a few months ago) I'd like to hear your opinions when you have a moment. In the wake

Hey, thanks for clarifying the wake (ceremony) reference in my DYK hook for Goodbye, 20th Century!. I just added a new DYK for August 12 on Rogers Orchards, if you are interested in checking that out for verification (two hooks, actually -- which one is best?). If those two DYKs go through, that will be #48 and #49 for me...not bad, I think, since I only got into DYK in May. Hope all is well with you.

DYK

Hi, you noted that my DYK nom for Brunei car plates do not have a reliable source. Any suggestions as to what else I could change the DYK to? --Novelty (talk) 04:02, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

How about ...that all standard vehicle registration plates in Brunei begin with "B" or "K"? I'm not sure about the punctuation at the end ("?), but it is verified by the website. What do you think? Thingg 04:10, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I changed it to something else that's similar to your suggestion. Do you think that's OK now? --Novelty (talk) 08:16, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that's better than mine. Hook verified. Great job with the article btw. Thingg 15:32, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK, part the second

I've responded to your questions - I hope I've covered everything. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 04:34, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for the answers. I verified the hooks. (btw, sorry it took me so long, the second hook gave me a little trouble) Thingg 05:12, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
It's OK. Writing the Bispham Medal article gave me a great deal of trouble as well; I only have one source to go on (a 1960 opera encyclopedia), and found the list of composers who won it coming in by dribs and drabs from various sources - Franchetti's listed in a lawsuit summary, of all things, while a couple of others came up in another source. There's remarkably little information on the subject online (which is one reason I wrote the article :))
Good work on your dedication - I don't think I'd have the patience for it. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
By the bye, just a warning - I'm going to try and write up both Preston Ware Orem and Thurlow Lieurance in an attempt to make it a sextuple nom - both of them were Indianists as well. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:53, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Haha, good luck. I just did the same with my nom. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 20:57, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

WP:DYK

About Zoo Melaka's DYK suggestion, is it 1500 now? H2H (talk) 11:00, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Yep. It's good now. btw, the way to find out the length of an article is to copy/paste the prose portion of the article (ie. the text minus infoboxes, lists, pic captions, tables, "see also" sections, etc.) to a word processor (such as Microsoft Word) and click on the stats of the text. The stat you're looking for is the "characters (with spaces)". DYK nominated articles have to have at least 1500 characters (including spaces) to qualify (or have the prose portion expanded 5x). Thingg 15:38, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for info;its my first DYK proposal, H2H (talk) 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK

"I have to admit I laughed when I saw this edit summary to an addition of ~12000 bytes" :) The reason why - I consider this a medium update. :) I tend to sit in a box for hours at length before clicking submit. Ottava Rima (talk) 15:27, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I expanded it here into a quintuple nom. I have not found enough information on Arthur Murphy's work to create a page and expand it into a six nom. However, I'm looking. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 19:34, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I founded enough to make An Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson. Six part nom. It feels maddening. However, there are more sources that I have to add to each of these pages to expand. These are all the major works, besides what Johnson wrote and what Boswell wrote earlier, so there is no more that can be added page wise. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 20:45, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi, sorry. I forgot to add the first postmortem biographical work on Johnson (the first full length work was by Hawkins, but the first short length general overview was by Thomas Tyers, called A Biographical Sketch of Dr Samuel Johnson. Biographies on Johnson are a subset of Johnson studies overall because everyone and their mother decided to write at least a little something on his life. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 00:39, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hans across the water

Hey there! I looked at the article -- it needs copy editing, but it doesn't violate WP:NPOV. That guy has been publicly accused of war crimes - it is a referenced fact. The problem I have is the DYK hook, which needs to be rewritten to either clearly state the accusation or make no mention of it. As it stands, it is trying to have it both ways. I might recommend asking EotW to consider a new hook. But that's just my opinion. Thanks for thinking of me! Ecoleetage (talk) 18:31, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey, glad to see this one went for DYK today. Thanks, again! Ecoleetage (talk) 21:19, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Charles Sanford Skilton

Don't know if it means much at this stage, but I thought you might be interested to know that I found another source, which I'd completely forgotten I have, that finally lists Skilton as having won the Bispham Medal for Kalopin. A 1980s-era biographical dictionary of American composers I picked up at a used bookstore, of all things. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:45, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

No, no - I'm grateful for the work you put in confirming it. I'm kicking myself because all of that work could have been avoided - the damn thing's staring me in the face from the bookshelf by the computer. Worst part is that I found it while I was in college, and didn't have the money for it then. So what did I do? I waited a year and a half, went back to the same bookstore, found the same book, and bought it. And then promptly forget to use it for anything. Grrrrr. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 23:17, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Hey, thanks - it's what comes of having a lot of time on my hands and comparatively little to do around the house. :) It's certainly a personal record, that's fer dang sure. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 23:18, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
At least someone has the patience to do it. I never did. Sometimes I'm surprised I have the patience to properly format an article. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 23:23, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK Questions

Just curious about a couple DYK's that you verified after I made a comment, perhaps I am being to strict in my interpretation of the rules. I just started looking at the DYK nominations so some advice would be helpful. With respect to Hurricane Gilma, I just don't see how the reference file which does not provide any information on what the data is can verify the hook. How is anyone who looks at this reference supposed to know what these number mean, since there is no heading or explanation of the numbers? And with regard to Nicolaas Wilhelmus Posthumus the hook specified that the institute was created to avoid destruction of socialist history documents by Nazi Germany. The reference article was a bit more vague saying that it was created In view of the menace of fascism and barbarism in Germany and other European countries. and the hook says it was to save socialist history document and what I could see in the referevnce said that the institute was created to save documents relevant to economic history. Am I being too strict in my interpretation of the rules. It would seem that the reference in the article should clearly and specifically support the hook. I would appreciate any advice regarding DYK verification. --Captain-tucker (talk) 02:34, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

o hai, i can haz knowlegge?

hey man, if you have some spare time and feel like wrapping your head around one of those "why the hell can't wiki do this properly" issues, see http://pinataisland.info/viva/User_talk:Xenocidic#Tab_links_for_testing . appreciate it! –xeno (talk) 16:22, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

i think I got a workaround sorted, but feel free to sign up there anyways, I might pick your brain in the future. =) –xeno (talk) 17:28, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
  • No problem. I did end up just trying out the full url method, but it ended up slowing the server to a crawl because of too many template calls and if statements to make sure the "current page" was bolded in the navbox. It's not a big deal, it just means the user will have to click the appropriate tab whenever they surf to a certain page. thanks anyways =) –xeno (talk) 20:25, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
  • here's another stumper for you. bear in mind that this issue isn't a priority whatsoever, but kudos if you can figure it out. see Template:UX. I'm trying to make it so that the default action of this template when subst'ed is to subst the content at User:Xenocidic/UBX/{{{1}}}, passing it any additional parameters. However I also want to be able to add an argument "t=yes" and not subst and in that case it simply transcludes the content. Feel free to do any testing on User:Xenowiki, and you can see my prior attempts =) again, no real huge rush for this, it's just something that would be nice to have. this isn't for WP, i'll be deleting Template:UX eventually. once I get it sorted or decide it's impossible. –xeno (talk) 17:59, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually I think this is impossible to do, because any if statements for the subst version needs to be substed but if statements for the transclude can't be substed. Never mind =) –xeno (talk) 18:29, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for trying, mate. In case you're interested, I worked around it by making another subpage that simply accepts the parameters and outputs the transclusion code. So it still needs to be subst'ed, but it's faster to type then typing out the whole transclusion code {{user:xenocidic/ux/whatevertemplate|params}}. –xeno (talk) 19:52, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm not allowed to fill up template space in that PII wiki, so I've got most of my templates in my userspace at /UX/ –xeno (talk) 20:02, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

I was wondering Thingg, if you can watch this article: ORB (Venture Bros. episode)

A Man In Black keeps editing out parts of it and we have to keep restoring them. This is not the only article he is regularly editing and people keep restoring. Can you look into it and see if you can get this guy to stop? Thanks. -BigGator5 07:37, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Input, please

Hello again! Sorry to bother, but can you please review the August 28 DYK entry for Czesława Kwoka? It appears someone is trying to deny the entry based on "unwritten rules" that do not appear to be part of the official DYK policy. If the entry passes, as per the DYK rules, can you please verify that? Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 18:34, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

If the official rules specifically do not state as much, I see no reason why this entry should not be confirmed. Why have official rules if we don't play by them? Ecoleetage (talk) 18:49, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
PS The rules clearly state: "Articles should have a minimum of 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body prose (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables)." The official rules say nothing about quote boxes. The "unwritten" rules are not policy. I would appreciate if you could verify the entry based on the policy. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 18:53, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
The nomination, as is, meets the criteria as per the official rules. Please let me know if you can check it. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 18:56, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
PPS Actually, someone got there first with the green checky-thing. But thanks, again, for listening. I hope the day is a good one for you! Ecoleetage (talk) 19:07, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
PPPS To answer your earlier comment -- yes, an RfA is coming, either later Sunday night or Monday. :-) Ecoleetage (talk) 22:33, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Kosovo

Surely it's POV to call Kosovo a country on wikipedia when the UN does not recognize it as such? 41.245.142.230 (talk) 15:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Larry LaRocco

I noticed that you stepped into the edit war currently occurring on the Larry LaRocco page and was wondering if you could provide some guidance to a new editor trying to stop the ongoing revisions to this page from an anon user who is intent on posting inflammatory material on a BLP page for a current political candidate. I am not the most conversant in parsing the syntax of wikipedia and have simply been undoing this users edits every chance I get. As you have also attempted to revert the page I assume you have some means to guide me in preventing further abuse by this editor. Sixdegrees2008 (talk) 21:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

2008 Summer Olympics medal table

Hi, I know the reverts you've been making at the above page are probably the right thing to do but perhaps explaining the changes to Jamyfox would have been more constructive than vandal templates? The user did after all think that they were making constructive edits. Also since they weren't actual vandalism you came quite close to a 3RR violation yourself. 3-ply toilet paper

Why was my contribution regarding the 3-ply toilet tissue removed? It is an important landmark in the history of toilet paper. leo —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.120.77.113 (talk) 23:21, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Eco's in the house, with new articles

Hey there, just a heads-up that I am back on WP and writing like a madman -- check out the 9/17 DYK if you don't believe me! Thanks for your continued support and friendship -- it is great to be back here. Ecoleetage (talk) 02:21, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Yay! [hugs] FangedFaerie (Talk | Edits) 01:42, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Thought I'd show you my first noms for deletion, and I had to fight with the templates and criteria a bit. I feel kinda bad about it, actually. I spent a couple days trying to find info to bulk them up and make them into better articles, but it's just not there. Regards. FangedFaerie (Talk | Edits) 06:46, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
While I'm having firsts, thought I'd show off my work on this one. :) Regards. FangedFaerie (Talk | Edits) 03:59, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm at loose ends here. I believe User:Tautologist means well, but s/he's pushing really hard for the (alleged) connection between Sarah Palin and Thomas Muthee. I'm all for making the latter's page more interesting and in-depth about its main subject. I've tried to tone down some of his edits and give some logical info for him to chew on, but he's drowning the Palin talk pages and the Wasilla Assembly of God's talk pages (main page currently in total lockdown) in stuff about witch-hunting. When the editors elsewhere make him leave, he dumps some of it on Muthee's actual page. I don't think he needs to be banned, but I'm not sure what to do from here. Regards. Blocked for 3RR violation

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 1 hour in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating the three-revert rule. Please be more careful to discuss controversial changes or seek dispute resolution rather than engaging in an edit war. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below. Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

I know that the other editor's actions could be seen as vandalism, but it was sufficiently arguable that it would have been better to report him to WP:AN/3RR instead of edit warring. Remember, there are lots of other folks who can revert persistent edit warriors too. Consider this a short shock from the proverbial electric fence. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Note: A log of this block has been made on Talk:Barack_Obama/Article_probation#Log_of_sanctions. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:47, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Josiah - are you familiar with this editor's long history of prolific, on-target vandal-fighting? I guess one hour isn't a "big deal" but I'm concerned that it puts a blemish on his record that is perhaps a bit harsh. I realize the Obama article is high-profile, but it looks like Thingg has gotten caught up as unfortunate collateral damage. Perhaps a warning would have sufficed? We most often give vandals 3-4 warnings, after all.  Frank  |  talk  12:29, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
I make it a general rule when blocking for 3RR to block all participants who have violated the rule, although I don't always block all of them for the same duration. (The vandal got three hours, which to my mind signals that he was at least three times as much at fault.) I know that it's easy to get carried away when fighting a persistent vandal, but sometimes even a good contributor needs a small reminder. Since Barack Obama is a high-profile article and on article probation, it's got far more eyes on it than the average article and there's all the more reason to let someone else do that fourth revert.
I don't consider a one-hour block a significant blemish — I know lots of folks who've become admins with more and longer blocks! That said, I am human and do make mistakes, and it's true that I wasn't aware of Thingg's vandal-fighting history. I'll look more closely next time I'm blocking for 3RR. Maybe a fifteen-minute block would have been better. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 12:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. My main reason for concern is that this is a user who has made great vandal-fighting contributions and recently was unsuccessful at RfA, so there seems to be an interest in being able to do even more for the project at a later date, and a block might make that date even later.  Frank  |  talk  14:28, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
I've been trying to decide whether to comment here or not, as I don't want to pile on and I know the block has expired already. But I just want to confirm that someone else thinks Frank is right; this block doesn't seem terribly rational. Josiah, your comments above indicate you at least knew this was a grey area before you blocked; if so, wouldn't the prudent approach, the respectful approach, have been to send Thingg an orange bar, rather than block him from editing? Whether it was a 15 minute block or an hour block, the thing I have trouble with is that for a good faith editor, a message would stop it as easily as a block would. There has to be a little consideration for individual circumstance here; Thingg was reverting an account, with a 99% chance of being a sleeper of a previously blocked editor, who's only purpose was to get autoconfirmed and to edit war on the page.
That said, I'm not calling for Josiah's head on a platter, and I agree, Thingg, that at most this will force you to write an extra paragraph at your next RFA explaining the situation; it shouldn't do any long term harm.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm reblocking your edit war opponent indefinitely as a blatant POV-SPA-sock-etc. nogoodnik. --barneca (talk) 16:35, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
*sigh* well, I was just trying to help out with the article. I figured I would be safe because of the FAQ #2 on the talk page and the fact he was being most unreasonable. I guess not. :( Thingg 22:04, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Actually, upon reflection I think this block was a bad move on my part. I should have just given a warning. Every referee sometimes makes a bad call, and this was one of mine. I'm sorry, and I'm going to investigate whether there's a way to remove the block from your record. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 02:37, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I think the 1-second block with the explanatory note and link, coming directly from you as the blocking admin, are perfect. While I personally had already considered this a "done deal", I now think it's the best possible result. This stuff happens, and it's been cleaned up, and that's the way the world should work.  Frank  |  talk  00:28, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

Hi Thingg. I would like to thank you for your support in my RfA and the confidence expressed thereby. It is very much appreciated. :) The RfA was closed as successful with 73 supports, 3 opposes and 4 neutral. I would especially like to thank WBOSITG for nominating me. Best wishes and thanks again, —αἰτίας discussion 22:50, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Adminshipp Round 2

so apparently we've in an adminship crisis ... only 7 promotions last month! have you considered making another go? I'd be happy to nom you again and there's also an open offer for nomination statements from a 'crat so he could possibly co-nom. whaddya thinkk? –xeno (talk) 12:50, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

It's still just as much of a fire pit as it was the last time around... hopefully that 3rr thing won't be a problem because the admin rescinded it with the comment, you'll just need to make a statement in your opening as to the particulars. you had a decent amount of support the last time around, the CSD thing seemed to have been what really set things on the downward spiral. lemme write up the nom sometime this weekend and then you can decide if you wanna make another go at it. –xeno (talk) 14:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I could probably be convinced to co-nom, and I could focus on that block thing since I said something about it at the time. Let me know, U2.  Frank  |  talk  14:52, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I asked Dweller if he wanted to write something based on his recent post to WT:RFA, but he said he's been busy, so I'm not sure if he'll have time- so go ahead and have at it if Thingg's ok with that. though, I already touched upon the B.O. block thing. –xeno (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

(←) So now you decided to run an RfA. :) You'll do just fine, Thingg. Good luck! -- RyRy (talk) 21:10, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I am soooooooooo glad to see you up for RfA. You are one of the best editors on Wikipedia and I know you will be one of the best admins, too. Ecoleetage (talk) 21:41, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to drop you a line and say good luck - I supported you last time, and I categorically support you this time. You are more than ready in my humble opinion. I hope the RfA doesn't veer off it's very positive, and very accurate, course. Cheers dude! Wisdom89 (T / C) 23:48, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism

Should User talk:24.62.59.31 receive his/her final warning yet? The vandalism is nonstop. -- IRP 03:38, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

I only see 3 examples thusfar. --Kukini háblame aquí 03:39, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
^^ STALKER!!!11!!! ;) Anyway, it would probably be better to give him the standard level 3 because quite a few vandals stop after getting that and reading WP:BLOCK. Thingg 03:42, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
You have new messages
Hello, Thingg. You have new messages at IRP's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
Was not!!! - Actually our work on rc patrol was crossing over...so I decided to look into what you had been up to...and lo and behold...you are doing good work! And, I might add, giving good advice. Cheers, Kukini háblame aquí 03:57, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Although, now that we have crossed paths, I am wondering why sometimes you warn vandals with huggle and others you dont? Just curious. --Kukini háblame aquí 04:04, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I tend to prefer warnings to be given, as it creates a clear record of efforts to try to encourage editors to do something constructive on wikipedia. If they won't, then they might be in need of a little "cooling time" via a temporary block. Kukini háblame aquí 05:01, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
