Update
It's not long on my screen, in fact it's exactly the right length! Gatoclass (talk) 06:49, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, seems there's no way to tell how it looks on different screens, because previously you were telling me my updates were too short!
- Anyhow, I trimmed one of the hooks back a clause, which has shortened it by a line on my screen, so it should look slightly shorter on yours too hopefully. Gatoclass (talk) 06:56, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
-
- I pulled one per your and Bench's comments. The update looks ridiculously short on my screen now, but I'm trusting it looks okay on yours. If it looks too short when it's ready to post, just undo my last edit and you'll have it back as it was.
-
- I'm logging off for a while now, so I probably won't be around to post the update or continue this conversation. Bye for now, Gatoclass (talk) 07:22, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Aargh! Timezones!!
Dammit, they always go up when I am asleep (the quarter when Russula nigricans was up, that is...). I am on the east ocast of Australia....did wake up and get to see Hygrocybe coccinea though :) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:48, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK Gallery
The answer is "yes," I'm interested in continuing the DYK Gallery effort in July. I enjoyed doing it in June with help from Hassocks and you. To make it more worthwhile, do you think it would be feasible to make it part of the DYK page (maybe a sub-page)? By doing so, we could get help from people going to the DYK page, and it would be accessible by anyone on that page (more accessible than it is in my sandbox). Also, do you think we could create an award of some type for the people with the most-viewed DYKs each month? Cbl62 (talk) 13:01, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the admininstrator who maintains the stats feature User talk:Henrik is on vacation, so no data has become available yet for July. Once it's up and running again, I'll start a new list.Cbl62 (talk) 14:41, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Weird
The besieged WP Indonesia Project EN - (sic) - owes you a star and barn or two for your continued defence (hold the nose) of Durian beyond the call of duty SatuSuro 13:12, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- LOL. Why do you call it "weird"? --BorgQueen (talk) 13:14, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well in the australian project deserts, rolf harris and a few other items attract inordinate amount of infantile vandalism - whereas in the indonesian project it seems weird that the smelliest item in indonesias flora ( i remember walking the streets of yogyakarta many years ago and grimacing at the odour) should require such a vigilance - but then the hit count for wikipedia articles reflects some weirder items i suppose SatuSuro 13:22, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
- And as a signing off comment the project was almost :( 1421/1434 free until tonight (oz time) SatuSuro 13:32, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
DYK
Hi, BorgQueen --
Sorry about that; I had never updated DYK before. I'll keep that in mind for next time. Dylan (talk) 14:05, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Hello! As per your request, an infobox and poster art was added for the DYK-nominated film Texas Night Train. Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 11:54, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Update
I think I'll probably leave it to you at this stage, since you are probably using a monitor with a more common aspect ratio and thus have a better idea how many more hooks are needed. Gatoclass (talk) 06:20, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
- I seem to be taking an unofficial wikibreak ATM. The enthusiasm just seems to have fizzled in the last week or two I'm afraid. I'll probably still do a bit here and there, but I don't see myself putting entire updates together right now, maybe just helping out when I can with the odd hook or two. Gatoclass (talk) 06:55, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK
Hi there, I noticed that you were adding the Image hook for the next DYK update, but, I think I have found another that illustrates the subject better than the Image that you selected for the main page, this is the Image: Image:Nebo05(js)-cropped for DYK.JPG
I think that this would better show the Early Byzantine mosaics because the Image is a close up of the moasics themselves because at the small resolution it shows the mosaics better. Thanks and All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 01:29, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- I already have cropped the image myself. --BorgQueen (talk) 01:30, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Cubebs
Strange, I don't know. I was intrigued by this little-known and largely disused cousin of black pepper when I saw it in the catalog and bought it, and after I tasted them, I realize why they're no longer widely used! :) Did you notice that I broke one open just to show what the berries look like inside? (They're hollow.) Badagnani (talk) 03:41, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Now we need a photo of Litsea cubeba. There are some nice (but not-yet-free) photos at Flickr. Badagnani (talk) 03:43, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

- I've uploaded a new image with the blank space cropped off. And next time you upload C-uploaded copies, please make sure its name is identical with the original commons image. (No "...for DYK" please) We have to archive every update along with the image, and when C-uploaded copies get deleted we only have a red link unless it retains the original name. --BorgQueen (talk) 03:45, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again, although uploading a Image with the same presents a problem, because when I try to locally up-load a file of the image over the Commons copy, it give me a huge warning saying that there is already an Image on commons with the same name and that I HAVE to chose a different name, it simply won't let me upload over the commons Image (From what I have gathered the only people who can override the warning are admins). Anyways, Thanks And All the Best, --Mifter (talk) 13:28, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- Will do :). --Mifter (talk) 13:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Francis Beltran
This may just be me misunderstanding the process, but I'm unclear on why Mindmatrix (talk · contribs) gets credit for the Francis Beltran DYK and I don't. While he did propose the alternative hook (which wound up being), I contributed the expansion which made the article eligible in the first place (plus the original nomination). WP:R2D
You often make edits I miss, but concerning edits like this one, are you aware of WP:R2D? Art LaPella (talk) 22:01, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
OK. So far, User talk:Ryulong#WP:R2D appears to verify that the guideline is to leave the redirect alone. Art LaPella (talk) 05:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
My discussion with User:Ryulong hasn't gone very well and I'm dropping it. But I think you'll agree he isn't an authority for overruling a guideline he wasn't even aware of. Art LaPella (talk) 07:03, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
See User talk:Athaenara#WP:R2D. Bypassing redirects seems to have spread like an urban legend, and WP:R2D just isn't that well known. Art LaPella (talk) 04:10, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm back. I have no complaint against you at all, but you led me to adventures I never would have expected from Wikipedia administrators. Hopefully, this won't happen again, because now I can direct people to this link: Wikipedia talk:Redirect#Link here. Art LaPella (talk) 21:54, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Advice
Hi there, this is kind of unrelated to DYK but I need some Wikipedia related advice. This new user who I just ran into has just nominated me for adminship. While I am flattered that he nominated me to run for adminship, I am unsure of what to do, I do intend to become an admin but I am still in the process of looking for an admin coach because I still think that my editing needs some refining before I make a run for adminship. Frankly I am at a loss for how to handle this. Any advice would be appreciated, --Mifter (talk) 22:20, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps you could wait and apply for adminship after you've acquired more experience. --BorgQueen (talk) 22:24, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi BQ. If you have a moment, please take a look at DYK candidate "Pteridomania" as an editor, over-zealous in my opinion, slapped a copyright vio tag on it preventing me from making any improvements. Thanks much. - House of Scandal (talk) 22:09, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Comma
Yes, according to Comma (punctuation)#Grammar: "The rule is, of course, not limited to U.S. states and cities: a comma is used to set off any individual elements in names of geographical places or political divisions (countries, provinces, counties): "The plane landed in Kampala, Uganda, that evening." [6]" I haven't been enforcing this rule because it looks unfamiliar to me, but I wouldn't take out the comma either. Art LaPella (talk) 06:31, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK
An editor listed a July 4th DYK nomination in the expired noms[1]. Apparently, the Iraiyanar Akapporul DYK request got deleted without being considered, probably because it was at the very bottom of the suggestions. I just came across his note on my talk page.[2] It looks like a lot of effort went into the article. Any chance on adding it to the Template:Did you know/Next update? Thanks. (I also posted a note on Gatoclass's page). GregManninLB (talk) 23:57, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for changing the pic to the lighthouse one. I was going to do it myself, but at the time I was trying to put the update together, wikipedia was going through one of its "I don't want to load pages" periods and I just got sick of trying :) Gatoclass (talk) 08:07, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, ok. Such periods do not last more than a few minutes, in my experiences... --BorgQueen (talk) 08:09, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
Upcoming DYK
It looks like Rudget has already pulled a full list out of the noms. My concern is that, if the selected DYK image is used, then the next update will produce a Main Page featuring foure men's heads. That is, there are currently four images on the Main Page, and all but DYK is an image of a man's head. With our next update of DYK, that image would also become a man's head. Can we please have a more interesting image? --EncycloPetey (talk) 10:56, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- That;s one of the reasons I often go looking for more interesting images to use. --EncycloPetey (talk) 11:01, 13 July 2008 (UTC)
- I noticed that too - It's still four heads because the featured pic is a man's head too. Palpatine would have made five. --EncycloPetey (talk) 11:05, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

MOS: Music?
Hello. Is there a page I can consult which will explain what content is appropriate for an article about a band's tour, for example Tom Waits's current Glitter and Doom Tour? Surely, there must be policy or guidelines for what information should be present and what should not, yes? Thanks. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 21:53, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- You might want to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Music. --BorgQueen (talk) 21:54, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I looked there, but could not find anything relevant... Did I overlook something? ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 22:13, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, I retract that statement. I found a link to Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/MUSTARD, but it did not have the information I needed either. So, let me put this question to you: Do setlists seem like appropriate content for a tour article? I would argue that it is not appropriate, but there does not seem to be a policy. Any thoughts? ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 22:19, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps you should ask this question to the regulars at the project page. I don't usually pay attention to music-related articles. --BorgQueen (talk) 22:51, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 20:13, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Naming convention
Yes, especially of the part: "... unless: the title is a proper noun". Species names refer to unique entities and thus are proper names; the case is similar to the correct article title not being "New york" or "London university".
However, there is no unequivocal opinion in WP:ToL. Whereever standardized names for biological species exist, they are always capitalized as proper names, see for example Anser_(genus)#Living_species_and_taxonomy. I tend to stick to that policy, especially as scientists (who are the prime authority in this case) usually do the same these days. For example, the IUCN Redlist. On Wikipedia, the issue is not being handled consistently ATM however - basically it depends on the original source used to start an article -, and in any case thanks for notifying me I forgot to redirect!
But see for example torrent frog for a case where the term is not a proper name, and thus, the no-caps policy does apply. And while I will create species articles as proper-name articles, I won't mass-move others that have been named as "unproper" names if there is no firm ToL policy on that particular taxon (e.g. for plants). However, I will mercilessly decapitalize any and all "Grass Frogs" and suchlike I come across, except when it's part of a species name (which would require a further qualifyer, e.g. "Little Grass Frog", which is titled the way it is because it was created from the IUCN Redlist).
A case in point can be stated as this:
Because there is only one band by that name, but "chili pepper" can refer to a half-dozen species of the genus Capsicum and their innumerable cultivars. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 22:37, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Shel-Silverstein.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Shel-Silverstein.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 12:30, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

DYK archiving
Yeah, that always made more sense to me. I did that only because sometimes, back when I had to do it more regularly, you'd find the last set of hooks had never been archived, and you'd notice that other people archived the hooks as soon as they were uploaded, apparently to prevent that.
Another thing that we should remind admins to do is to delete the picture if it was uploaded from Commons to protect here. I do that all the time, but I don't know if others remember to do that. Daniel Case (talk) 13:45, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi BorgQueen – yeah, I'm just trying to work toward the update after this one. :-) It looks like there's a better supply of hooks from the 16th rather than the 15th, so I'll probably add a couple of those to the next next update. Let me know, of course, if that's ever an issue. Cheers! Jamie☆S93 15:08, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

One story would have lined them up just about right, trouble is, that would have left only three stories in the On This Day section, and I'm not sure if three is enough or if they have a minimum.
- I ended up pulling one story from ITN and adding an extra one to DYK, but I hate doing that as I think more than eight stories on DYK just ends up looking like a mess. Anyhow, it's done now but I'd like your opinion on whether or not it would have been okay to pull the OTD story. Gatoclass (talk) 05:24, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
-
- Yeah, I thought of pulling an extra story from ITN but then the Did You Know and On This Day headers wouldn't have lined up very well, and I thought I read somewhere that they are supposed to. But I agree it's much better that they don't line up than that you have a huge space at the bottom of DYK.
-
- Thanks for the advice, I'll have a much better idea what to do next time :) Gatoclass (talk) 05:33, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Problem
Hi, I am facing a strange technical problem in the article Anti-tobacco movement in Nazi Germany. The article uses Harvard referencing. All of it works. For example, if you click this, you will automatically go to the last book in the reference section. But if you click this reference, by rule you should go to the second book in the reference section. But this is not happening with reference 5. Can you tell what is the problem here. Is there any technical problem, I cannot understand. Previously discussed this issue with Gatoclass. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 05:29, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, thanks for linking the article. You are right it is not working probably by having the name of so many authors. However it is a laborious job to change the format of all the references in Anti-tobacco movement in Nazi Germany right now, will use the another format for other articles next time. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 06:07, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Re: Archive
Are you referring to Wikipedia:Recent additions? Rudget (logs) 13:01, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Y Done. Rudget (logs) 13:06, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- I did, it was something I was debating personally about aswell. I have a relatively small screen so I'm unable to make judgements on wider-screens. I had seen discussions between yourself and other DYK updaters before and I got the sense that 7 is generally the limit, with at least one occasion being that the DYK section was actually shorter than selected anniversaries and it remaining as that. Is it too late to add one now, or should it wait for the next update? Rudget (logs) 13:44, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
- Aye. Apologies for all the confusion over the past few weeks. Rudget (logs) 13:52, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
I wanted to let you know that User:Geologik did not get his credit for creating Mike Ayers, nor did I get the credit for nominating it.--Bedford Pray 15:53, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- Shouldn't you contact the updater, User:PeterSymonds, instead? --BorgQueen (talk) 16:09, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
- My bad; although I believe I later did. Cheers.--Bedford Pray 14:03, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Credible author
Hello. A credible authors' reference is being "overrided" by edit-warring. I recently tried to add to the telescope article but this editor seems to think that his opinion overrides a VERY credible author in Mr. Richard Powers. I've been blocked before for edit-warring recently, so I don't want this to be another incident on my record.
Anyway, the other editor seemed to have asked his friend-type editors to form a consensus, so I will do the same. The Islamic connection here is, Al-Haytham. He is FUNDAMENTAL to the telescope and the FATHER of optics. By definition, the summary can include him since the radio and electro-magnetic telescopes are derogatory to the average person looking at the article; I wanted to add it to the history section since it looked cleaner. Can you help your fellow InternetHero?? InternetHero (talk) 21:02, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Current Masonic hook
Do you think we should wikilink the word Masonic in my current DYK hook to Freemasonry? Also, Peter has never done a double hook before, so I did not get credit with Grand Lodge of Kentucky.--Bedford Pray 14:02, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- Wikilinking it wouldn't hurt. --BorgQueen (talk) 14:30, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
-
- Sorry about that; I'd never seen a double hook before. Apologies also for not replying earlier to your message. I had the window open, but for some reason never typed the message! I agree that the photo for that hook was much better. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Bah
I hate it when that happens :( Now I've got to find another appropriate one. Thanks for the heads up anyhow. Gatoclass (talk) 15:20, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Congregation Beth Israel (Lebanon, Pennsylvania)
Thanks for letting me know. Jayjg (talk) 00:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Update
Do you think "a celebrated Royal Navy officer" is too peacocky? I thought of changing to just "Captain Sir Murray Maxwell of the Royal Navy", but then I wasn't sure if that would make the update too short. Gatoclass (talk) 13:35, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think it is acceptable... but if you still have doubts you should ask the Duke or Art. --BorgQueen (talk) 15:12, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Never mind. It's probably accurate to say he was "celebrated", I was just a little worried about setting a precedent but I guess I'm not bothered enough to feel the need to change it. Gatoclass (talk) 15:29, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
DYK
Could you add User:Wetman for credit over London (1738 poem) here. He contributed to its creation, so it would be nice to give him credit also. Thanks. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 19:04, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you kindly. :) He did contribute quite a bit to one half of that nom, and I am glad that he will be noticed. Ottava Rima (talk) 19:48, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
ITN Administrator category
I created the category Category:Wikipedia in the news frequent administrators. As you have experience in ITN and ITN-related matters, I invite you to add your name there. The purpose is so if a non-admin (such as myself) needs an administrator to add, modify, or remove an item, you have experience in this area. Thanks, SpencerT♦C 01:45, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the notice... - DaughterofSun (talk) 16:21, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Article on Shiva
Thank you very much for your advice. However, the rationale behind my editing the article was data redundancy. Anyways, I am not going to engage in an "edit war". If it is your wish to see the article as it is, well I am not unhappy to oblige. --OpelC (talk) 18:23, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Front page balance
Does it looks unbalanced to you? It does to me. I notice that there are a couple of long On This Day hooks which could readily be trimmed to rebalance the page if necessary. Gatoclass (talk) 08:08, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I trimmed a couple of the OTD entries. Balance looks better now. Gatoclass (talk) 08:15, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
stinkhorn
You beat me to the "relish" removal. It was unlinked in the original nom--I think it was intended to mean enthusiasm, not pickled condiment, but it's clearly confusing in the context. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:14, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
ITN
I just realised and was on the way to revert myself. Oops, thanks for spotting that and reverting; at least it was only there for a couple of minutes. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 19:51, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Bypassing redirect
I had two major unexpected confrontations over that before, so I think I should wait until it appears at WP:ERRORS again. Art LaPella (talk) 21:51, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Next update
Does the next update in the queue look long enough to you? It looks slightly short on my screen, but not enough to worry about. Gatoclass (talk) 15:08, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
- One line short but good enough. --BorgQueen (talk) 17:27, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
What, the current batch on the front page? Gatoclass (talk) 09:45, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Okay. Gatoclass (talk) 13:33, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Okay now? Gatoclass (talk) 13:41, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Omid Tahvilli page
No big deal but subsquently is spelled subsequently. AndrewMcinally (talk) 05:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Next update note
I added a note to the Next Update page asking updaters to try and remember to take about half their hooks from U.S. subjects. I find it kind of irritating to come back to the DYK page after an update or two to find that someone has used up all the non-US hooks, leaving nothing but American hooks for the next updater to draw from. Gatoclass (talk) 13:32, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Good move. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:45, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, just wanted to check that you approved :)
-
- Re the current next update - if you are online - is there room for another hook? I replaced a couple of hooks by Peter Symonds, but they were a bit shorter than his so the update is a tad shorter than it was. Gatoclass (talk) 17:36, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
My apologies for probably causing an edit conflict, I had already been editing the template for about two minutes before you added the tag (I was editing lower down than you were and because we didn't edit any of the same text it didn't cause an edit conflict with me :) ) Anyways, my apologies for causing you any edit conflicts. --Mifter (talk) 03:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes you did but it happens. Thanks for the note. --BorgQueen (talk) 03:40, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I've tweaked your hook to make it more interesting. Please visit here and see if it is okay. --BorgQueen (talk) 12:49, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Up to you... maybe "...the higher peak..."? Xn4 (talk) 15:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
DYK thanks
Hi BorgQueen. From time to time I nominate a DYK, and every time it seems to be you who adds it to the template, updates the article talk and drops a note on my talk page. So this is to say thanks for all your tireless hard work keeping the DYK running. I enjoy getting my new articles on the main page, but it's an equal pleasure to regularly come across people like you. So thanks! Gwinva (talk) 02:22, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Current DYK
Yep, I did; I should have put more in. Most came from the oldest expiring noms, which is the main reason they're like that. Apologies, I did mean to stick to Gatoclass's note, so it was a genuine mistake on my part. Best, PeterSymonds (talk)
