United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida

The United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida serves the residents of thirty-five counties from eight courthouses. The counties are: Baker, Bradford, Brevard, Charlotte, Citrus, Clay, Collier, Columbia, De Soto, Duval, Flagler, Glades, Hamilton, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Hillsborough, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Nassau, Orange, Osceola, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, St. Johns, Sarasota, Seminole, Sumter, Suwannee, Union, and Volusia counties.
It holds court in Fernandina, Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Live Oak, Ocala, Orlando, St. Petersburg, and Tampa.
Appeals from this court are heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
Judges
A total of 32 judges have sat on the court since its creation. The court currently has15 authorized judgeships, filled by judges appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Seven judges who have taken senior status are eligible to continue hearing cases. As of 2003, the Chief Judge of the District is Judge Patricia C. Fawsett, succeeding Judge Elizabeth A. Kovachevich, who served as Chief Judge from 1996-2002 and remains on the bench.
