United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana is a federal court in the 5th Circuit with facilities in New Orleans and Houma.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana represents the United States in civil and criminal litigation in the court. The current U.S. Attorney for the district is Jim Letten, who served as the chief prosecutor in the racketeering trial of former Louisiana governor Edwin W. Edwards, his son Stephen, and several of Edwards' associates. Edwards was convicted on May 9, 2000, and is currently serving his sentence at a federal prison in Oakdale, Louisiana.

This district's jurisdiction comprises the following parishes: Assumption, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne and Washington [1].

The New Orleans facilities were shut down due to Hurricane Katrina, but the hurricane did not cause substantial damage to the Court's building, allowing it to reopen in December 2005 and temporarily house the Orleans Parish Criminal Court.
