Seven ships of the United States Navy have been named USS California in honor of the 31st state.

• The USS California (1867), was a screw sloop originally named Minnetonka.

• The USS California (ACR-6), a Pennsylvania-class armored cruiser, was commissioned in 1907. In 1914, she was renamed San Diego and then sunk in 1918.

• The USS California (SP-249), was renamed the Hauoli and served during World War I as a motor patrol boat in New York City Harbor.

• The USS California (SP-647), served during World War I as a motor patrol boat in San Francisco Harbor.

• The USS California (BB-44), was a Tennessee-class battleship that saw action in World War II.

• The USS California (CGN-36), known as the "Golden Grizzly," was the lead ship of the California class cruiser, a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser.

• The USS California (SSN-781), is a Virginia class submarine currently under construction. Delivery to the Navy is expected in 2013.
