The World (Chinese: 世界; pinyin: Shìjiè) is a 2004 film written and directed by Jia Zhangke. The film was nominated for the "Golden Lion" at the 2004 Venice Film Festival but ultimately lost to Mike Leigh's drama Vera Drake. It was the first film by Jia to gain official approval from the Chinese government.[1]
