The Null Corporation is an independent record label that releases the work of Nine Inch Nails. Two recent albums by the band, Ghosts I-IV and The Slip, have been released in physical formats under the Null Corporation imprint. The name also appears in association with the band's digital downloads and on their official YouTube channel.[1]
Trent Reznor, the driving force behind Nine Inch Nails, has been an outspoken critic of the traditional music industry since the early 1990s. The name "The Null Corporation" could be considered as a modification of Reznor's now-defunct vanity label, Nothing Records, since the word "null" essentially means "nothing." Reznor's use of the term 'Corporation' (instead of 'Records') likely reflects a new sense of independence -- along with a need for increased discipline and order due to the reality of operating an independent label (Nine Inch Nails officially ended their contract with Interscope after the release of Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D and the band is no longer working under the auspices of a major label). Recent experiments by the band have been aimed at taking complete control over the process of releasing music to the public. Unlike Nothing Records, which was subsidized by Interscope, The Null Corporation appears to be a truly independent label.
