The Legend of the Lake is an episode of Garfield and Friends. It originally aired on September 30, 1989.

Episode recap

Garfield serves as a tour guide at the Cat Museum. After showing tourists various exhibits, he leads them to a special lake outside. He asks the tourists if they would like to hear the legend that goes along with the lake; they seem uninterested, but Garfield tells the legend anyway.

The legend features a race of prehistoric cats that eat rocks and insects for food. However, one cat in particular (who resembles Garfield) looks far across the lake and spots a land where lasagna trees grow, as well as a race of wild puppies that guard the trees. He is determined to cross the lake and reach the trees despite everyone else telling him that such a feat is impossible.

After various inventions for crossing the lake fail, the cat decides to swim across the lake. After a seven-hour swim he washes up on the shore of the land where the lasagna trees are, and he is excited until he discovers that the wild puppies are five times his size. While the puppies appear friendly, they still chase the cat to the shore; and despite the cat having little strength due to the first swim, he dives back into the lake to swim back. He is never seen again, and Garfield concludes by stating that the lake is named after him: Lake Stupid.

Notes

  • Jon does not appear in this episode (unless that’s Jon walking behind Garfield).
  • When the cave cat looks at the island the puppies appear small but when he's over there they appear gigantic.
  • The puppies are really a bunch of Odies. Although none of them have a spot on their bodies, instead they're either stripes or many spots.
  • The three prehistoric cats shown at the beginning of the legend resemble the Three Stooges.
  • This is a rare appearance where Arlene makes a cameo (as the female cave cat). However, Arlene is not featured throughout the rest of the series, as Garfield has Penelope as a girlfriend.
  • Most of the cave cats were taken from Garfield: His 9 Lives.
