The J. M. Smucker Company was founded in 1897 by Jerome Monroe Smucker, who sold his first product -- apple butter -- from the back of a horse-drawn wagon.citation needed The company has been family run for five generations.

Today, over a century later, The J. M. Smucker Company is the leading marketer and manufacturer of fruit spreads, peanut butter, shortening and oils, ice cream toppings, sweetened condensed milk and health and natural foods beverages in North America. Its family of brands includes Smucker's, Jif, Crisco, Pillsbury, Eagle Brand, R.W. Knudsen Family, Hungry Jack, White Lily and Martha White in the United States, along with Robin Hood, Five Roses and Bick's in Canada.
