2005/2006 Internet plan controversy

TPG has been said to combine aggressive pricing with indifferent customer service. It once offered a very cheap broadband plan (circa 2005 – it was a 1.5 Mb/256 Kb, 20 GB per month download, and unlimited uploads, at AU$50), which attracted many customers.

When Telstra wholesale ADSL port prices rose, TPG increased the pricing of their ADSL plans. The new plan offered was a 1.5 Mb/256 Kb with 25 GB download per month, and priced at AU$69 a month. Customers on the $50 unlimited plan were obliged to change plans - to either the proposed one, a slower plan at the same price (or any other plan of their choice without penalty fee), or to special offer $60 plan with 10 GB download (only offered to some of the customers previously on the $50 unlimited plan), once TPG had installed DSLAM's into the Telstra exchanges, some customers were migrated over to ADSL2+ giving TPG higher profit margins.
