SNOCAP is a company founded in 2002[1] as an "end-to-end provider of digital licensing and copyright management services for digital music."[2] It was started by Shawn Fanning (best known for creating the Napster music service), Jordan Mendelson, and Ron Conway. Former employees include music lawyer Christian Castle, the company's first General Counsel.[1]
MySpace announced in September 2006 that they will be using SNOCAP to operate a digital music service.[3] A Charlottesville, Virginia-based venture capital firm provided key funding and support and also partnered with a local newspaper, The Hook, to promote the service with a downloading contest.[4]
In March 2007, the social media site imeem has announced a partnership with the company to track music being played on the site and share ad revenue with artists and labels.[5]
SNOCAP is backed by Ron Conway, Morgenthaler Ventures, WaldenVC[1], and Court Square Ventures[4] .
In October 2007, SNOCAP reportedly laid off approximately 60% of the workforce.[6] Other reports indicate that the company is for sale.[7]
In February 2008 it was reported that SNOCAP had been acquired by imeem[8], confirmed in April 2008[9].
