History

SES Astra was formed in 1985 as Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), its first satellite entering service in 1989. In 1999 SES acquired a 34.1% in AsiaSat, followed in 2000 by the purchases of a 50% share in NSAB and 19.99% of StarOne.

In 2001 SES Global was formed by SES for the $4.3 billion acquisition of GE Americom, which was completed in November of that year. SES Global was established as the group management company on 9 November 2001; with the renamed SES Astra and SES Americom as subsidiaries. As a result of this transaction, SES Global's largest shareholder was GE Capital, with a 20% holding - GE exchanged its stake for a mixture of assets and cash in early 2007. In 2006 SES completed the acquisition of the Netherlands-based global satellite communications operator New Skies Satellites from private equity managers Blackstone Group.

The company was renamed from 'SES Global' to 'SES' at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 14 December 2006.
