NEL Platform of Punggol MRT Station
LRT Platform of Punggol LRT Station
Punggol MRT/LRT Station (NE17/PTC) is a MRT and LRT interchange station of the North East Line and the Punggol Light Rapid Transit in Singapore.
Provisions have been made for the future North Shore Line which links Changi Airport, Pasir Ris and Sembawang. The box tunnels are located under the NEL platform. This is unlikely to be built before year 2020 due to low density of living in Seletar (Which is in between Sembawang and here.)
The artwork in this station is Water, Landscape and Future by Goh Beng Kwan.
History
The station was to have been unopened when the North East Line opened together with Potong Pasir and Woodleigh Stations when the government gave the go ahead to build the North East Line in 1996 as Punggol 21 was still undeveloped then. But as more developments of Punggol 21 were progressively unveiled, the station was opened with the rest of the line in 2003.
Incidents
2003 train disruption
The operations control centre at Sengkang Depot was alerted to a fault at Punggol station at 6.09 am on June 22, 2003. Trains were disrupted between Sengkang and Punggol stations.
The system automatically shut down the tracks there, so trains could not move out. Engineers rushed to Punggol station to change a faulty modem card in a computer that communicates with the train control system.
NEL operator SBS Transit also mobilised 35 buses to ferry passengers to Sengkang station, until train services between the two stations resumed at 7.35 am. Except for a 15-minute hold-up at Sengkang station at 6.24 am, the rest of the line was not delayed.
2008 train disruption
On October 8, 2008, a power supply problem caused disruptions between Sengkang and Punggol stations at about 9pm. Approximately 5000 passengers were affected and shuttle buses were activated to ferry passengers between the stations.
