  • 20 August: An Argentine nightclub owner, six rock musicians and three low-level public officials went on trial Tuesday for a 2004 discotheque blaze that killed 194 concertgoers in the country's deadliest fire. Cromagnon Republic nightclub owner Omar Chaban cradled his head in his hands as a three-judge panel read charges against the defendants. Grieving family members held up images of the dead in the crowded chamber, while hundreds of people gathered outside the courthouse in central Buenos Aires. Chaban and the members of Los Callejeros rock group face prison terms ranging from eight to 20 years if convicted in the fire, which was touched off when a flare ignited ceiling foam and filled the club with asphyxiating smoke. In addition to the deaths, more than 1,000 revelers were injured. Prosecutors accuse Chaban of packing the 1,500-capacity club with more than 4,000 people and blocking exits to keep ticketless fans from sneaking in. The musicians allegedly encouraged fans to set off flares during their concerts. The three officials could receive prison sentences from two months to a year for lesser offenses such as lax enforcement of city safety regulations. The accused made no public comments on Tuesday, but in the past they have denied responsibility for deaths. The blaze has already led to the downfall of former Buenos Aires Mayor Aníbal Ibarra, who was ousted by a city legislative panel in March 2006 over allegations that poor government oversight contributed to the deaths.Associated Press
  • 19 August: Sergio Agüero scored two second-half goals in seven minutes Tuesday and later set up another to lead Argentina to a 3-0 win over rival Brazil and into its second straight Olympic final. Agüero opened the scoring for the defending champions by chesting in a left-side cross in the 52nd minute, then scored again from two meters on a cross from the right in the 58th. Agüero also set up a 76th-minute penalty kick that was converted by Juan Román Riquelme. It was the first victory for Argentina against Brazil in three years. It hadn't beaten Brazil since a 3-1 victory in a World Cup qualifier in June 2005. International Herald Tribune
  • 19 August: In a nationwide measure, Argentina has granted gay couples the right to collect the pensions of their dead partners. The National Social Security Administration's director is to sign the resolution on Tuesday, and it will become law upon publication the following Wednesday. It requires that same-sex couples show they have lived together for at least five years. Maria Rachid, president of the Buenos Aires-based Argentine Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Trans, said she has been fighting for this change for a decade. She credited the government of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner for creating the environment in which such a change could take place. Héctor Timerman, Argentina's ambassador to the United States, told CNN in Atlanta that it was not so much the influence of the current president as it is the changes that have occurred since Argentina emerged from the dictatorship years of 1976-1983. • 15 August: Argentine authorities are exploring a possible link between the deaths of 14 children and an experimental vaccine they were taking in a clinical trial run by GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Argentina's food and drug administration is investigating whether the deaths are tied to the Synflorix vaccine, said an agency official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case. The drug, designed to fight pneumonia, ear infections and several other pneumococcal diseases, was manufactured by the London-based GlaxoSmithKline, the world's second-largest drug maker. • 14 August: Argentina's foreign debt rating outlook was cut to stable from positive by Moody's Investors Service, which cited "heightened political volatility". Moody's left Argentina's rating at B3, six levels below investment grade. The company said in a statement that "further downward ratings pressure is unlikely in the short term". Bloomberg
  • 12 August Argentina's government announced a plan to buy back some of the country's debt, triggering a recovery in financial assets following last week's selloff. While news of the intervention has propped up markets, economists remain broadly pessimistic about President Cristina Kirchner's populist economic policies, which have stoked inflation, eroded Argentina's fiscal position and alienated the agribusiness sector that is the motor of the economy. That pessimism was reflected in a move late Monday by the ratings agency Standard & Poor's Corp. to lower Argentina's foreign and local currency long-term credit ratings to B from B+.Wall Street Journal
