This is a list of characters from the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants.

Main characters
SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants, the eponymous title character of the series, is a friendly and optimistic sea sponge who physically resembles a kitchen sponge, and lives in a pineapple on 124 Conch Street. He works at The Krusty Krab as a fry cook (for which he was named "Employee of the Month" a total of 374 times), practices martial arts, and attends Mrs. Puff's Boating School. SpongeBob's best friend is Patrick, and he has a pet snail named Gary.
SpongeBob was originally named "SpongeBoy" by the series creators, but it was later changed due to copyright issues.citation needed
Patrick Star
Patrick Star is an overweight sea star who lives under a rock, and is SpongeBob's best friend. He often convinces SpongeBob to accompany him in dangerous activities like playing near fishhooks and eating whole pumpkins. In real life, sea stars are "brainless," and Patrick lives up to that characterization. He often suffers from lapses of memory, and engages in odd behaviors, such as sleeping with his eyes open. SpongeBob nonetheless consults Patrick for advice and guidance. Patrick's parents, Herb and Margie, are rarely seen in the series, but he and SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary, were distant relatives.
Squidward Tentacles
Squidward Tentacles, SpongeBob and Patrick's cranky neighbor, is a six-legged octopus. He is bald with a large nose, plays the clarinet, and lives in a Moai head located between SpongeBob's and Patrick's residences. He works as a cashier at the Krusty Krab, a job he despises. SpongeBob and Patrick consider Squidward to be their best friend, but the feeling is not mutual. Squidward's animosity toward the pair is because of their love for jellyfishing, which was revealed in flashback as his own invention in one episode. Squidward's main rival is his former band classmate, Squilliam Fancyson, who is the richest squid in Bikini Bottom.
The series animators illustrated Squidward with six tentacles, believing that giving him the proper number for an octopus (eight) made him look too burdened.citation needed
Eugene H. Krabs
Eugene Krabs is the cheapskate owner and founder of the Krusty Krab. He is a red crab, though his daughter Pearl is a sperm whale. He lives in a giant ship's anchor converted into a luxurious home, and owns a pet worm named Mr. Doodles. Mr. Krabs has three nephews, and is infatuated with SpongeBob's boating school teacher, Mrs. Puff.
Sandy Cheeks
Sandy Cheeks is a female squirrel from Texas who is SpongeBob's closest friend after Patrick. She is the series' only land-based character, but lives in a large underwater home known as the "Treedome", which contains a large oak tree and is sponsored by three primate scientists who provide her with grants so she can invent mechanical devices. She is frequently shown practicing karate with SpongeBob and practices several extreme sports.
Sheldon Plankton
Sheldon J. Plankton is a green copepod who is Mr. Krabs's nemesis. He runs an unsuccessful restaurant called the Chum Bucket, located directly across from the Krusty Krab. Plankton is married to a computer named Karen, and nearly became Mr. Krabs's stepfather in one episode. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Plankton finally steals the Krabby Patty secret formula and takes over the bodies of the citizens of Bikini Bottom, almost achieving world domination.
Gary the Snail
Gary the Snail is SpongeBob's pet sea snail. Within the series, snails are analogous to cats, and as such, Gary vocalizes like one. A running gag on the show is that SpongeBob must not forget to feed Gary or he will eat the couch.

- Patchy the Pirate (Tom Kenny) – A live-action character who is the president of the SpongeBob fan club. He hosts SpongeBob specials and related major events.
- Potty the Parrot (Stephen Hillenburg) - Patchy the Pirate's mischievous pet parrot who enjoys playing practical jokes.
- Mrs. Puff (Mary Jo Catlett) - A white-spotted puffer with blonde hair and green fins who is the owner/teacher of a boating school. Her late husband, Mr. Puff, was caught by fishermen and made into a lamp.
- Larry the Lobster (Doug Lawrence) - The crustacean lifeguard of Goo Lagoon, Larry is a bodybuilder and workout fanatic. He is friends with SpongeBob and Sandy.
- Mermaid Man (Ernest Borgnine) and Barnacle Boy (Tim Conway) - Two aged superheroes whom SpongeBob and Patrick watch on television. They reside in the Shady Shoals retirement home.
- King Neptune (Jeffrey Tambor)- The ill-tempered king of the ocean, King Neptune is a massive green merman with a ginger beard and a bald head. Patrick has a crush on his daughter, Mindy. He was voiced by Jeffrey Tambor in the movie, and Paul Tibbitt and John O'Hurley in the series.
- The Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray) - A pirate ghost named after the famous ghost ship of the same name. He lives underwater in a giant ship, and collects souls in a pickle jar.
- Karen (Jill Talley) - Sheldon Plankton's computer WIFE (Wired Integrated Female Electrophaleocenograph) who often expresses human emotions. She helps Plankton in his schemes to steal the Krabby Patty formula.
- French Narrator (Tom Kenny) - He speaks at the start of some episodes, and has a French accent. On the November 16, 2004 episode of the NPR program Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Kenny admitted that Jacques Cousteau was the inspiration for the French narrator, as series creator Stephen Hillenburg considered him an idol.

- Betsy Krabs (Sirena Irwin) - Eugene Krabs' mother who lives in a large pink anchor-shaped house.
- Gene Scallop (Gene Shalit) - A famous Bikini Bottom food critic who once reviewed the Krusty Krab.
- Grandma SquarePants (Marion Ross) and Grandpa SquarePants - SpongeBob's grandparents.
- Harold SquarePants (Tom Kenny) and Mrs. SquarePants (Sirena Irwin) - SpongeBob's parents.
- Man Ray (John Rhys-Davies) and The Dirty Bubble (Charles Nelson Reilly) - Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's enemies. Man Ray has a humanoid body with a special mask and helmet, while Bubble is capable of encasing enemies inside his body.
- Mindy (Scarlett Johansson) - King Neptune's bespectacled teenage daughter. Patrick has a crush on her.
- Nicholas Whithers - An orange fish who hosts the program House Fancy, a prestigious homeowners' show in Bikini Bottom.
- Officer Nancy O'Malley - Purple policewoman fish with blond hair.
- Old Man Jenkins - An elderly fish who used to live in the Krusty Krab before it became a restaurant, and currently resides at Shady Shoals. Voiced by Doug Lawrence and Tom Kenny in separate episodes.
- Painty the Pirate (Patrick Pinney) - A painting of a pirate head who sings the SpongeBob SquarePants theme.
- Perch Perkins - TV anchorman for Bikini Bottom News.
- Squilliam Fancyson (Dee Bradley Baker) - Squidward's successful and snooty rival from high school who plays in a band.
