Park Lane Interchange in Sunderland is the second-busiest bus station in the United Kingdom, after Victoria Coach Station in London[1]. It is on the south-western fringe of Sunderland city centre and opened on 2 May 1999. It replaced Park Lane Bus Station that was built in the 1930s and a Go North East bus depot.
A Tyne and Wear Metro station directly underneath opened on 28 April 2002 enabling speedy travel within Sunderland and Newcastle. Park Lane's westbound platform is now used for trains to South Hylton. Trains that terminate at Park Lane cross over onto the northbound platform for passengers to alight.
The Interchange has National Express coach services to London and other destinations across the United Kingdom.
Station art
Along with others on the Sunderland extension, the Metro station has vitreous enamelled panels in a colour scheme [2] created by Morag Morrison. Each station uses a different arrangement of colours. Due to its being the only underground station on the extension, the effect is most noticeable at Park Lane.
