Paolo Ruffini (September 22, 1765 – May 9, 1822) was an Italian mathematician and philosopher. Among his work was an incomplete proof that quintic (and higher-order) equations cannot be solved by radicals and Ruffini's rule, a quick method for polynomial division.[1]

Born in Valentano, he practiced as both a professor of mathematics and a doctor[2]. He died at Modena.
