Military history of Korea
|
Korea's military history spans back thousands of years, beginning with the kingdom of Gojoseon and its repulsions of ancient China. For the next several milleniums, Korea's military history consisted of invasions and repulsions, invasions and repulsions, and more invasions and repulsions, notably from ambitious Chinese and Japanese empires, the Mongol empire, and sporadic instances of Chinese and Japanese pirate activity on Korean shorelines. With the exception of Gwanggaeto the Great's great military campaigns against China deep into Manchuria, Korea has never conducted a notable military invasion of another empire or a nation. Many Koreans take pride in Korea's mere survival for thousands of years despite nonstop invasions , namely from Chinese empires. Sterling examples of Korean military prowess were the military histories of Goguryeo, Chosun, and Koryeo, all of whom suffered extraordinary invasions and successfully repulsed enemy forces. Korea has a line of famed generals and commanders who successfully prevented the extinction of the Korean race. Korea suffered decades of war from Chinese, Japanese, and Mongol or northern "barbarians" and it resulted in Koryeo's eventual defeat and the Chosun empire being subjected to Japanese imperial colonialism in the 20th century. It was only five years after Korean independence that in 1950, the Korean War broke out. It was only with the generous military might of the US and UN that half the Korean peninsula was saved from communism. Korean troops in Vietnam are famous for being one of the bravest and most decorated forces to have participated on the US side in the Vietnam War. Today, Korea fields one of the largest standing armies in the world and military technologies are one of the best. Korean troops participate in peacekeeping operations around the world and guard the 39th Parallel. The Korean military also enjoys long military alliances and projects with countries around the world, namely the US and UN.
Korean military history boasts incredible stories of survival and victory over invaders. Over 900 hundred invasions of the Korean peninsula can be counted back today. It is not only the sheer survival of Korea as a race that Korea takes pride in, but the economic and military comeback Korea staged in the '70s and '80s after a terrible and violent history Korea pulled through and something that few nations in this world have experienced and lived to tell it.
