Michael Christopher Starr (born April 4, 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii), better known as Mike Starr, is an American musician, and was Alice in Chains' original bassist from the group's formation in 1987 to 1993. He played bass for albums Facelift, Sap, and Dirt and left the group in the middle of the Dirt tour. He also sang backing vocals on the song "Confusion" on the Alice in Chains album Facelift.
According to press releases, Mike Starr's departure from Alice in Chains was amicable, and was due to the rigors of constant touring and the desire to spend more time with his family.
He was most often seen playing several variations of a Spector NS-2 bass guitar. He later played bass for the band Sun Red Sun, which featured Ray Gillen and Bobby Rondinelli, both former members of Black Sabbath.
Personal life
Mike Starr grew up in Burien, Washington and attended Puget Sound Junior High School where one of his favorite bands was Kiss. (citation needed) He went to High School at Highline High School year of 1984. As a teenager he was already fascinated with music, spending his spare time playing the guitar in his bedroom both with and for friends. In spite of the Rock and Roll reputation, he was a quiet young man with a gentle nature.(citation needed) Mike Starr has a son named Preston whom he has never met. In the years following his tenure with Alice in Chains, he has had numerous brushes with the law. In April of 1994 he was jailed for 30 days in a Houston,Texas jail for misdemeanor drug possession at the Houston Intercontinental Airport. He was trying to check in for a flight to Los Angeles with a suitcase he had stolen from the baggage claim area. Authorities searched him thoroughly and found marijuana in his possession. He has also been in legal trouble on numerous occasions in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. His past offences over the years include driving under the influence,reckless driving, and various drug charges. He was also recently arrested in 2005 for vandalizing a car in Seattle after he reportedly pulled a hood ornament off the hood of a car. He was booked on property destruction and theft charges.
