This is a list of countries in 2006. It lists all of the sovereign states, dependent territories, disputed territories, and unrecognized states that existed during that year, and gives a short description of their level of sovereignty.

Widely recognized independent states

At the of 2006, there were 193 states which were widely recognized as sovereign by the international community. In the beginning of the year, there were 192 states with one being dissolved into two during the year. All except for Vatican City were members of the United Nations.

Serbia - The Republic of Serbia became an independent state on June 3, when Montenegro declared independence from Serbia and Montenegro. It officially declared independence on June 5. As the successor state to Serbia and Montenegro, it retained United Nations membership.
Serbia and Montenegro - The State Union of Serbia and Montenegro was an independent member of the United Nations. It was dissolved on June 3, when Montenegro declared independence and Serbia automatically became its successor. The dissolution was confirmed on June 5, when Serbia officially declared independence.

In 2006, there were 2 independent states which had recognition by at least one other widely recognized state. Neither was a member of the United Nations

Northern Cyprus - The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was a self-declared independent state recognized only by Turkey. It was located within the internationally recognized borders of Cyprus.
Taiwan^[12] - The Republic of China was an independent state and former United Nations member claiming to be the legitimate government of all of China. Its claim was recognized by 26 states. Chad ceased to recognize the Republic of China over 2006.

Unrecognized states

In 2006, there were 5 independent states with no international recognition

Abkhazia - The Republic of Abkhazia was a self-declared de facto independent state. It was located within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia. The government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, which Georgia claimed was the legitimate government of the entire territory, was in exile in Tbilisi until July 27, when it moved to a region known as Upper Abkhazia.
Nagorno-Karabakh^[13] - The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic was a self-declared de facto independent state. It was located within the internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan.
Transnistria^[14] - The Transnistrian Moldovan Republic was a self-declared de facto independent state. It was located within the internationally recognized borders of Moldova. Moldova claimed that the territory was an autonomous area.
Somaliland - The Republic of Somaliland was a self-declared de facto independent state. It was located within the internationally recognized borders of Somalia.
South Ossetia - The Republic of South Ossetia was a self-declared de facto independent state. It was located within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia. After October, it was controlled in part by the government of the Provisional Administrative Entity of South Ossetia, which Georgia claimed was the legitimate government of the entire territory.

Ashmore and Cartier Islands - The Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands was an uninhabited external territory of Australia.
Australian Antarctic Territory - The Australian Antarctic Territory was an uninhabited external territory of Australia. It consisted of the portion of Antarctica claimed by Australia.
Christmas Island - The Territory of Christmas Island was an external territory of Australia.
Cocos (Keeling) Islands - The Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands was an external territory of Australia.
Coral Sea Islands - The Coral Sea Islands Territory was an uninhabited external territory of Australia.
Heard Island and McDonald Islands - The Heard Island and McDonald Islands were an uninhabited external territory of Australia.

Glorioso Islands - The Glorioso Islands were an uninhabited possession of France. They were claimed by the Comoros and Seychelles.
