Judson (Jud) Laipply is an American motivational speaker and comedian from Bucyrus, Ohio.[2] He is best known for his performance in the Evolution of Dance clip, which is currently the #2 Most Viewed Video (All Time), #1 Most Favorited (All Time) Video, and #6 Most Discussed (All Time) Video on YouTube, with over 101 million views as of October 13, 2008.[3] The video had the most all-time views on YouTube for just over 2 years, before being replaced by the music video for Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend", which has over 100 million views. However, this video has been accused of having an exaggerated number of views due to the use of a link with an auto-refresh mechanism posted by AvrilBandAids, a fansite devoted to Avril Lavigne.[4] YouTube actually limits views to 200 per day per IP address, but the accusations of cheating drove curious viewers to the page, further raising the view count.[5]
Context
Evolution of Dance is the finale to Laipply's show called "Inspirational Comedy".[6] His website describes the show as "combining his thoughts about life and change with humor".[1] In 2002, he began closing many of his college, high school and corporate appearances with his unusual dance medley. It soon became a "crowd favorite".[7]
In the video, Laipply dances to a soundtrack that plays through various popular songs ranging from Elvis Presley to MC Hammer and Michael Jackson. During its initial rise in popularity, it amassed over 10 million views in under two weeks and was featured on CNN, MSN, E!, USA Today, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and AOL.[8] Judson tells the story behind the creation of the Evolution of Dance in a video interview available on StayTunedTV.[9] A recent revision of the dance is three minutes longer including songs such as "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira, but no public video of it currently exists.citation needed Laipply is currently working on "Evolution of Dance 2".[10]
