January 31, 2005

• Joginder Jaswant Singh new Chief of Army Staff: General Joginder Jaswant Singh becomes the first Sikh Chief of Army Staff. He takes charge as the 22nd Army Chief at New Delhi from General Nirmal Chander Vij who retired after 43 years of service.
• The supreme court dismisses a petition filed by the producers of Black Friday challenging an order staying the screening of the movie. (Times of India)
• The Government of India promulgates an ordinance to overturn a supreme court verdict on a Rs. 803 crore tax dispute between itself and tobacco major ITC. (Hindustan Times)

• The Goa Congress asks the governor, S C Jamir to use his discretionary powers vested to him under the constitution to dismiss the BJP government as it has been reduced to a minority.

January 29, 2005

• Goa BJP Government in minority: The BJP-led government in Goa headed by Manohar Parrikar is reduced to a minority after four BJP MLAs resign from the 40-member House. While the Congress has staked its claim to form the new government, Parrikar has said he will prove his majority.
• Former BJP president Venkaiah Naidu's helicopter is set on fire by suspected Maoists during his campaign tour of Gaya, Bihar. Naidu escapes unhurt. (New Kerala) (Indian Express) (Times of India)
• A series of moderate-intensity aftershocks rattle the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over a month after the region was devastated by a quake-generated tsunami. No casualty or damage to property is reported. (Times of India)

• Satara stampede toll up to 258: Police begin investigation into the January 25 stampede at the Mandhardevi temple in Wai, Maharashtra and the violence thereafter, which left 258 people dead. (Gulf Daily News) (New Kerala) (Sify)

January 25, 2005

• Stampede at Satara, Maharashtra: At least 35 people, mostly women and children, were feared killed and over 50 injured in a stampede at a religious fair in Wai in Satara district of western Maharashtra on Tuesday afternoon. The stampede occurred during the annual Mandra Devi Yatra at the Mandra Devi temple, located on a hill in Wai.

January 18, 2005

• Sania Mirza becomes the first Indian woman to enter the third round of a Grand Slam tennis event and set up a clash with former World No. 1 Serena Williams at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Wednesday. Sania, who entered the draw with a wild card, fashioned a stunning 6-2, 6-1 upset win over 84th ranked Petra Mandula of Hungary in the second round. (Rediff)

• An Indian train fire that killed up to 60 Hindus and sparked deadly religious riots in 2002 was started by accident - not firebombs thrown by Muslims as had been reported, a government inquiry has said.(BBC)
