Gonzalo is a character in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. He is a wise old councillor who provides Prospero with magic books when Antonio sets him adrift on a boat. He is seen as the only good-hearted character in The Tempest, and tries to comfort King Alonso after he loses his son Ferdinand.
Gonzalo is the only character able to see Caliban for more than a demonic beast. Gonzalo is Shakespeare's "role model" for Elizabethan society, and uses the character in many ways, such as to voice his own opinion.
