Expedition: Robinson was a popular Swedish reality television program, that debuted in 1997. It was the first production worldwide of a format that was developed in the UK, a format that has since then also been produced in many other countries, most notable under the title Survivor. The Swedish show was shown for nine seasons. It's one of the biggest and most controversial TV successes in Scandinavia. The final episode of the fourth season was viewed by 4,045,000 people (current population at that time 9,1 million) in Sweden which makes it one of the most viewed programs in modern Swedish TV history.
The name of the show alludes to Robinson Crusoe.
The first series of the programme was subject to some controversy, and contributed to a moral panic in Sweden. The first contestant voted off the show killed himself shortly afterwards, with his family reportedly blaming the rejection he felt as a result of being unpopular with the public.
Format
Its format was developed by Planet 24, a United Kingdom TV production company owned by Charlie Parsons and Bob Geldof. Their company Castaway Television Productions retained the rights to the concept when they sold Planet 24 in 1999. (Mark Burnett later licensed the format to create the U.S. show Survivor in 2000.)
Sixteen contestants are put into a survival situation and compete in a variety of physical challenges. Early in each season, two teams compete, but later the teams are merged and the competitions become individual. At the end of each show, one contestant is eliminated from the show by the others in a secret "Island Council" ballot.
