East Ayrshire (Siorrachd Inbhir Àir an Ear in Gaelic) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders onto North Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire, South Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. With South Ayrshire and the mainland areas of North Ayrshire, it formed the former county of Ayrshire.
The area was formed in 1996, from the former Kilmarnock and Loudoun and Cumnock and Doon Valley districts. Kilmarnock is the largest town in East Ayrshire.
Main Towns
Since Kilmarnock being the largest town not only in the shire its self , Kilmarnock also holds the largest town in the state of Ayrshire where East Ayrshire is located with North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire. Other small main towns are New Cumnock & Cumnock.
