Dublin South East (Dáil Éireann constituency)
|
Dublin South East is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It is located in the south-eastern part of Dublin City, including areas such as Ballsbridge, Donnybrook and Sandymount (collectively referred to as "Dublin 4"), as well as the areas of Ranelagh and Rathmines, and the central business district of the city (including Trinity College Dublin and St. Stephen's Green). The constituency has an electorate of 59,896 and at present is served by 4 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). Many constituencies like Dublin West, and Kildare North have greater electorates electorates, but are served by 1 less public representative. The constituency quota of circa. 6,000 is the lowest in Ireland. This fact received some criticismcitation needed as it was half that of the largest quota, Cavan-Monaghan. The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.
The constituency includes some of the most affluent parts of the country, such as Ballsbridge, areas with a transient population like Rathmines, deprived areas of the south inner city, and working-class districts like Ringsend. It was the constituency of Michael McDowell, the former Minister for Justice and ex-leader of the Progressive Democrats, and was the constituency of former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald. By geographical size, it is the smallest constituency in the country. Two Presidents of Ireland, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese both contested the constituency unsuccessfully in the 1980's.
The two Fianna Fáil candidates in the 2007 general election, Chris Andrews and Jim O'Callaghan come from reasonably well known dynasties. The 'rumble in Ranelagh' is a term used by Irish journalists to describe an open argument that took place between candidates Michael McDowell, and John Gormley, in Ranelagh, while canvassing in the 2007 election. Gormley twice defeated McDowell to take the last seat, in 1997 and again in 2007, both times by relatively small margins. The 1997 result led to a mammoth recount, the longest in Irish political history, before McDowell conceded defeat.
