Dong Biwu (Chinese: 董必武; Pinyin: Dǒng Bìwǔ; Wade-Giles: Tung Pi-wu; 1886 - 2 April 1975) was a Chinese communist political leader during the regime of Mao Zedong.

Biography

Dong Biwu was born in Huanggang, Hubei. He was the President (Chairman of the Executive Committee) of China from 1948 to 1949 and Acting President from 1968 until 17 January 1975 when Zhu De became the succeeding chairman. He was also Vice-President of the People's Republic of China from 1959 until 1975, jointly with Song Qingling.

Dong was a member of Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1945 to 1975.

He died just a year before Mao and several other important politicians.
