Dominican hip hop has its own style of hip hop music by mixing its native music and rapping to it like in the genres Merenrap or Merenhouse.

Hip hop is a cultural movement developed in New York City in the 1970s primarily by African Americans and Latin Americans.[1] Since first emerging in The Bronx and Harlem[2], the lifestyle of hip hop culture has today spread around the world.[3] One of the places hip hop spread to was the Dominican Republic. The four historic "elements" of hip hop are: MCing (rapping), DJing, urban inspired art/tagging (graffiti), and b-boying (or breakdancing). The most known "extended" elements are beatboxing, hip hop fashion, and hip hop slang.
All These elements have been carried on into the Dominican Republic since the mid 80's by young immgrants who return to their mother land usually from New York, Boston and Florida. Some of the first artists who carried on this culture where: Itto Gammy, Born Mc El Ministro, B.MC.P,TRIBU REVELDE, LA BOTELLA ,EL PADRINO, MOROCO , SONIC , OVER DOSE, BIG PAULIE, Panpano trukiny, Dj Mahogany, Dj Strike One, Los Guerreros Del Oriente, SANDY Mc, Mc Papo, ALE-X, EURY, HUSSI, WISTIN, D.B.P, ALCAPONE RAP, YOUR BASE ( PAPI SANCHEZ ), EL CIRCULO DE MUERTE, ZONA DE FUEGO , THE CLICK SQUAD, MAJAH MAGANDY, MCD, TARY, NUCLEO SALOMON Y muchos mas.
Some of these artist where influenced by African American dj's and mc's like: Afrika Bambaataa Grandmaster Flash Lovebug Starski The Sugarhill Gang DJ Clive "Kool Herc" Grand Wizard Theodore Melle Mel Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, The Wu Tang Clan, Krs1, Nas, Gravediggaz and many more. Other rappers where influenced by Puerto Rican and Panamanian, Reggae and Reggaeton artists such as: Vico C, Daddy Yankee, Mexicano, Og Black y Master Joe, Manuelito, Falo, Lito Y Polaco, Dj eric, Dj Nelson, Baby Rasta y Gringo, Dj Playero, El General, Dj Flex, Eddi Dee, Blanco, Hector y Tito, Wison G, Ivy Queen and many more old school artist.

A few Domincan artists in reggaeton include Noztra, Don Miguelo, Franquisia Records (Grandmax, Derry, Euro "El Sunami Lirical", Anddy Dyy, Tony J, Lay 2, & Mr. W), Gem Star and Big Mato, Los Dementes Algarete or LDA, Reychesta Secret Weapon of Tres Coronas, High Rollers Family, A&A, OG Black, Zequi House and La Fabrica. Some Puerto Rican reggaeton artists of Dominican descent include Arcangel, De La Ghetto, Miguelito, Nicky Jam, Jomar, Boy Wonder, and Nely "El Arma Secreta". After that have appeared a new generetion of Dominican Hip Hop some of the hip hop singer are Lapiz Conciente, Joa, MCD La Etiketa Negra, Toxic Crow, Vakero, Amaurys,[Micro's Way]], Mr.Face, Packer Luther King, Beethoven Villaman, Big K, Monkey Black, Guariboa, El Poeta Callejero, Piddy Pa aka Pablo Piddy, Danny Punto Rojo, Nikko Mozart la para, Tori Nash El Pope. Some American rappers come from Dominican descent such as Fabolous, AZ, Cassidy, Juelz Santana, J. R. Writer, Triple Seis, Ju Ju of The Beatnuts,and of the greatest emcees of all time DMC from RUN-DMC
