An amateur DanceSport competition at MIT.
DanceSport denotes dance as a sport activity. Initially this term was applied to competitive ballroom dancing, in its International Style.[1]
The sport has 3 major governing bodies: The International DanceSport Federation (IDSF), the World Dance Council (WDC), and the International Professional DanceSport Council (IPDSC). The WDC and IPDSC are governing bodies for professionals, while the IDSF governs both amateurs and professionals and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the sole governing body for the sport.[2] Worldwide, there are about 4.5 million IDSF-registered participants in the sport.citation needed
Popularity
Dance as a competition appears in televised competitions on multiple continents, including Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance and the Eurovision Dance Contest.
DanceSport is popular among students in many countries.[3] In the United Kingdom, about 20,000 students are members of the Inter Varsity Dance Association, or IVDA.citation needed
