Playing career

Sanford was never drafted into the NHL. Before the NHL, Sanford played for the Wiarton Wolves of the Western Junior C Hockey League, the Collingwood Blues of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League, the Owen Sound Greys of the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League, and the Owen Sound Platers of the Ontario Hockey League.

He was picked up as a free agent by the St. Louis Blues during the off season after his final year with the Platers and spent much of the next four seasons with the AHL Worcester IceCats, posting a combined 65–59–14 record and 10 shutouts. In limited emergency action with St. Louis during the 2002–03 season, he impressed with a 5–1 record and a 1.96 GAA before returning to Worcester of the AHL.

Sanford then played the next two seasons with the IceCats. For the 2005–2006 season he returned to the Blues. The Blues finished in last place that year but Sanford again impressed manywho? with his play by posting a 13–13–5 record, but injuries limited him from playing the full season. For the 2006–2007 season Sanford finally had his first shot at the Blues starting job, a job he competed for with Manny Legace. Things got off to a slow start for Sanford and the Blues however, and a groin injury along with improved play from Legace resulted in Sanford losing the starting spot.

On July 3, 2007, the Vancouver Canucks signed Sanford to a one-year, $600,000 contract to back up starting goaltender Roberto Luongo.[1] After appearing in 16 games in the 2007-08 Season, he was re-signed to another one year deal by the Canucks on July 3, 2008.

Sanford goes by the nickname of "Sandman". His goalie mask has often featured a sandman design, and recently he held a contest for Canucks fans, allowing them to submit artwork for his new mask design he will wear in the upcoming season.[2]
