Bungeishunjū Ltd. (株式会社文藝春秋, Kabushiki-gaisha Bungeishunjū?), established in 1923, is a Japanese publishing company known for its leading monthly magazine Bungeishunjū. It also grants the annual Akutagawa Prize, one of the most prestigious literary awards in Japan, as well as the annual Naoki Prize for popular novelists. They also grant the annual Bungeishunjū Manga Award for achievement in the manga and illustration fields.
The company publishes Bungakukai (文學界, Bungakukai?), the weekly Bunshun (週刊文春, Bunshun?) and the sports magazine Number, which represent public opinion of literary, political, and sport-journalistic culture, respectively. They are considered the market leaders in respective fields.citation needed The Bunshun, in particular, has come to be known for a number of litigations involving freedom of speech issues, particularly alleged privacy violations and defamation.

Company history
Writer Kan Kikuchi founded Bungeishunjū in 1923 with the statement:
自分で考えていることを何の気兼ねもなく自由な気持ちで言ってみたい、自分だけでなくそう思っている人のためにも文藝春秋を出すのだ (trans. Here I want to declare my thoughts with free spirit, without hesitating; Going to launch Bungeishunju for both me and others of the same desire.) [1]
The company was disbanded in March 1946 but was reestablished in June of the same year.
