Battle of Anacostia Flats

Battle of Anacostia Flats was the name given to the time when Herbert Hoover ordered federal troops to forcibly remove the World War I veteran Bonus Army who marched into Washington D.C. and demanded early payment of a bonus that was not due until 1945. Congress refused to make the payment but promised to pay train fare for those veterans who chose to leave. Most acepted the offer, but Hoover ordered Douglas MacArthur to remove those who stayed. MacArthur's troops carried out the eviction with bayonets and tear gas. One person was blinded and an eleven-month old baby reportably died of tear-gas exposure. The incident further reduced Hoover's chances against Roosevelt in the upcoming election.
