Austrian Americans are citizens of the United States who are of Austrian ancestry. According to the 2000 US census, there are 735,128 Americans of full or partial Austrian descent. The states with the largest Austrian American populations are New York (93,083), California (84,959), Pennsylvania (58,002), Florida (54,214) and New Jersey (45,154). This is probably a severe undercount, as many German Americans have ancestors from Austria; before World War I, when most German Americans had immigrated, Austrians were considered a type of Germans (like Bavarians, Rhinelanders, and Saxons).
