Area code 636 serves east central Missouri near (but not including) St. Louis, including parts of the city of Chesterfield, and all of Union, De Soto, Troy, St. Charles County, and Jefferson County. Area code 314, 636's neighboring area code for St. Louis and some of its suburbs, went all the way to Washington County and St. Francois County many years ago. 636 was created when 314 was split into two areas.
636 is also the original area code for the fictional town of Springfield on the television series The Simpsons. In a Simpsons episode entitled "A Tale of Two Springfields", area code 939 was created for what became New Springfield after the 636 area code ran out of valid numbers. When that episode first aired in 2000, 636 was already in real-life use, but 939 would not be until 2001.
