Area code 587 is a new telephone area code that, beginning 12 September 2008, will cover all of Alberta, Canada in addition to the current codes, 403 and 780.
Prior to 1997, area code 403 encompassed Alberta. In January 1999, area code 780 was introduced and covered the northern half of the province. The projected exhaust date for area codes 403 and 780 is March and October 2009 respectively. Two area codes, 587 and 825, have been reserved for Alberta's use.[1] The new codes will eventually overlay 403 and 780 simultaneously, covering the entire province, and making ten-digit dialling necessary. As a preliminary step, optional ten-digit dialling was introduced in Alberta on 23 June 2008 and will become mandatory on 12 September 2008, which is the same date that Alberta customers seeking new numbers may be allocated a number starting with area code 587.[2]
