North American area code 512 is a state of Texas telephone area code for numbers in the state capital area of Austin. It was one of the original area codes established in October 1947.

Area Code 737 Overlay

On Feb 23, 1999 Southwestern Bell notified (PL-NANPA-158) the NPA that the 512 area code was entering Jeopardy Status, and on December 2, 1999 Jeopardy status was declared. The necessary paperwork was filed with the regulatory authorities on March 1, 2000. On March 29, 2000, the Public Utility Commission of Texas issued an order for the planned relief of the 512 area code which called for a concentrated growth overlay of the Austin Metropolitan area and IH-35 corridor. (PL-NANPA-233) and subsequently approved the paperwork on April 19,2000. On April 25, 2001, the TxPUC announced that successful number conservation efforts had delayed the need for area code relief until possibly 2003 or later and ordered the new 737 area code overlay be suspended until further notice. (PL-NANPA-276). As of 2007-Nov-07 this suspension remains in effect. (See Planning Letters[1] and search the monthly updated status report[2] for more information.)
