Actimagine

Actimagine (pronounced /ˈɑk t̬ə mə ˌdʒin/) is a French company which develops video and vector graphics display software as well as Mobiclip, a mobile phone video codec. It holds patents on its low-power video codecs and DRM technology.

Actimagine is member of the Symbian Platinum program, the Electronic Business Group, Forum TV Mobile, and the Consumer Electronics Association.

The company's headquarters are located in Paris. It has a subsidiary in Tokyo and offices in Singapore and San Diego, California in the United States. Actimagine Corp. is registered in Delaware in the United States.

Sony Pictures Digital and The Carphone Warehouse used Actimagine's software to deliver TV-like full length movies on smart phones.

History

Actimagine was established in March 2003 by a team of engineers and managers. Actimagine started out with mobile gaming consoles. The video compression technology offered by Actimagine was an optimized response to the battery life and video quality requirements of Nintendo mobile video gaming platforms: Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo DS.

The Mobiclip codec provided high video quality with low battery consumption and was selected by major studios, such as Sony Pictures Digital, Paramount, Fox and Gaumont Colombia Tristar Films, and by leading handset manufacturers, such as Nokia or Sony Ericsson, to deliver video on memory cards for mobile phones.

In April 2006, Actimagine raised €3 million in equity financing from US venture capital firm GRP Partners. This first round of institutional fund raising enabled Actimagine to accelerate its business development in the USA and Japan.

Mobiclip Technology

Mobiclip has been developed with a completely different algorithm from the one used for other video codecs on the market, based on minimal use of the processor resources, allowing battery life to be increased considerably and the cost of the hardware to be reduced.

The codec provides extended battery life and high media quality. It is also simple to use: if the storage medium is a memory card, users just have to insert the card in the phone and click on an icon to start the video.

Video content can be pre-recorded on a memory card or on a SIM card or downloaded or streamed via a telecom network. For example, the full version of a blockbuster can be stored on a 128 MB memory card. For mobile phones equipped with a TV output, like the Nokia N95, users are even able to enjoy movies on a television screen, via their mobile phone, without affecting the picture quality. The phone therefore becomes a true video iPod.

Mobiclip is available for Symbian S60 and UIQ, Windows Mobile, Brew, Palm and Linux.

Mobiclip.com

Actimagine started a mobiclip.com to enable users to select and manage video content on the web, synchronize it with the mobile handset, and access it from a mobile phone at the click of a button, all in high definition. Mobiclip.com will be available world-wide and will be possible to access via any mobile phone.
