The 1988 VFL Grand Final took place on September 24, 1988 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground between VFL clubs Hawthorn and Melbourne. It was Hawthorn's sixth successive Grand Final while Melbourne were competing in their first since 1964.
Match Summary
Melbourne made its first Granf final since 1964 - and probably wish it hadn't. Hawthorn won the match by 96 points and in doing set a VFL record for the greatest winning margin in a Grand Final. It remained a record until Geelong's 119 point demolition of Port Adelaide in 2007. The Hawthorn side of 1988 remains among the greatest teams of all time.
