New South Wales Rugby League goes into its second season

• South Sydney Rabbitohs win the title on forfeit, defeating Balmain Tigers
• Cumberland, one of the nine original teams of 1908, had been absorbed by Western Suburbs Magpies after playing a mere 8 games
• Eight teams compete in season 1909: Balmain Tigers, Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Glebe Dirty Reds, Newcastle Rebels, Newtown Jets, North Sydney Bears, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Western Suburbs Magpies.

Football (soccer)

• West Auckland Town, an English amateur side, beat FC Winterthur of Switzerland 2-0 to win the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, one of the very first international club competitions.

Ice Hockey

• The first North American professional hockey organization is formed, the Montreal Canadiens. Eight years later, in 1917, Toronto will form the second professional hockey organization (1917) and come together to form the National Hockey League (NHL).

• November 30 - A goal is scored in the St. Andrew's Day match of the Eton Wall Game at Eton College. As of 2003, no more goals have been scored in the St. Andrew's day game (which is the most important match of the year) but points have been scored by other methods.
