June 19 - Monte Attell, won the World Bantamweight Championship joining his brother Abe Attell, who held the World Featherweight Championship, to become the first pair of brothers to hold world titles simultaneously.
New South Wales Rugby League goes into its second season
- South Sydney Rabbitohs win the title on forfeit, defeating Balmain Tigers
- Cumberland, one of the nine original teams of 1908, had been absorbed by Western Suburbs Magpies after playing a mere 8 games
- Eight teams compete in season 1909: Balmain Tigers, Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Glebe Dirty Reds, Newcastle Rebels, Newtown Jets, North Sydney Bears, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Western Suburbs Magpies.
