Many inventions and institutions are created, including Hans Lippershey with the telescope (1608, used by Galileo the next year), the newspaper Avisa Relation oder Zeitung in Augsburg, and Cornelius Drebbel with the thermostat (1609).

• 1602 - The first production of Hamlet is held.
• November 5, 1605 - The Gunpowder Plot to blow up the British Parliament.
• 1607 - John Smith of Jamestown enters Virginia.
• September 2, 1609 - Henry Hudson enters New York Bay.
• Galileo popularizes the astronomical use of the telescope.
